We are so sad to report that two young boys have lost their lives in a fatal Missouri car crash that occurred this past Friday, May 29.

The brothers, 6 and 7 years old, reportedly took the keys to their grandmother’s car and went driving before losing control of the vehicle and veering off the road.

From KMOV:

“A spokesperson for the Missouri Highway Patrol said the boys took the vehicle, drove through a field and then onto a county road in an unincorporated area east of Kansas City, Missouri.

According to the crash report, the 7-year-old was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control. The 2007 Buick Lacross became airborne more than once before eventually landing on its roof and catching fire. The boys were pronounced dead at the scene around 4 p.m. Friday.”

Don’t pretend there’s not a problem in America.

That’s how Nike kicks off its latest PSA in response to the overt racism we’ve seen take place over the past few weeks, amid a pandemic. Nike has built it’s athletic wear and footwear brand on the Just Do It slogan which encourages movement and a can-do attitude to overcome life’s obstacles– both big and small. But as a sign of the times, in the minute-long video, Nike says “For once, don’t do it.”

Next came a simple string of slides with white text, a black background, and a solemn piano track playing in the back as Nike plants its proverbial foot on the right side of history against the racism Black Americans have been facing for years.

[embedded content]

“For once, don’t do it.

Don’t pretend there’s not a problem in America.

Don’t turn your back on racism.

Don’t accept innocent lives being taken from us.

Don’t make any more excuses.

Don’t think this doesn’t affect you.

Don’t sit back and be silent.

Don’t think you cant be part of the change.

Fet’s all be part of the change.”

The message was so powerful it even prompted one of Nike’s biggest rivals adidas to show support to the ad by retweeting the video with a comment that read, “Together is how we move forward. Together is how we make change.”

The ad is a direct response to the unrest America has seen the past few nights as cities protest, riot, and loot in response to the killing of George Floyd. Floyd was killed by a police officer on Monday in Minneapolis after being arrested for allegedly using a fake bill at a nearby store. That’s when ex-police officer Derek Chauvin attempted to subdued Floyd by shoving his knee into his neck for nearly 10 minutes despite Floyd pleading for his life.

Chauvin has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Just as Forbes goes viral for blasting Kylie Jenner, their Highest Paid Athletes list is making headlines too.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who were no. 1 and no. 2 last year, respectively, came in no. 3 and no. 2 this year, with Messi losing the top spot to Swiss professional tennis player Roger Federer and Ronaldo maintaining his position. Fan favorites LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant all make the Top 10, with Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Deontay Wilder piercing the Top 20.

Troublingly, only two women make the Top 100  — Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.

“Athletes from 21 countries and 10 sports make the final cut this year, as do two women — Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams – the first time more than one woman has made the ranks since 2016, when Williams appeared with Maria Sharapova,” Forbes states, adding “Osaka, who earned $3.4 million in tournament pay, is another dream endorser, collecting $34 million from brands including Nike, Nissan Motor and Procter & Gamble. No female athlete from any other sport besides tennis has ever made this elite rank.”

Here’s Forbes official Top 10 list. Head over to the site for the full ranking.

1. Roger Federer – $106.3 million

2. Cristiano Ronaldo – $105 million

3. Lionel Messi – $104 million

4. Neymar – $95.5 million

5. LeBron James – $88.2 million

6. Stephen Curry – $74.4 million

7. Kevin Durant – $63.9 million

Colin Kaepernick has given his life to the fight against police brutality in America, so it’s no surprise that he’s speaking up against the tragic murder of George Floyd.

Floyd was killed after Minneapolis police were called to the scene of a suspected “forgery in progress.” At the time of his arrest, a police officer used his knee to pin Floyd’s neck to the ground for seven minutes while three other officers watched and assisted in restraining him. Floyd pleaded for his life, telling the officers he was in pain and couldn’t breathe while gasping for air. Video footage of the incident has the nation in an uproar, sparking protests and more.

From LeBron James to Ice Cube, Black celebrities have been vocal about their disdain for what happened — and it’s only right that Colin Kaepernick continue to add his own thoughts to the sea of messages out there. Kaep hit Instagram with a new message for his followers:

“When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction. The cries for peace will rain down, and when they do, they will land on deaf ears because your violence has brought this resistance. We have the right to fight back! Rest in power George Floyd.”

As always Kaep is inspiring hearts around the world. “You’re an inspiration,” one fan commented. “I used to think that when you were kneeling that it was disrespect and stupid but now after watching these things happen over the past few weeks my perspective has totally changed,” another admitted.

May George Floyd rest in power. We are praying for the justice the Black community deserves.

Nice try NeNe! That’s essentially what Kenya Moore’s saying after she “exposed” her fellow housewife in an interview.

Kenya was a guest on her friend Kandi’s “Speak On It” YouTube show and she sent some shade NeNe’s way.

If you can recall, at one point NeNe uploaded a photo of attorney Lisa Bloom alongside a caption that read: “Happy I now have @lisabloomesq on my team! I’ve stayed quiet a long time and gathered info along the way. Now I’m gonna make some noise #waitforit #unfair in confidence go here👉🏾booknene@gmail.com.”

She followed it up with a pic of Lisa captioned, “#Wecomingforyou.”

The photo came before those comments NeNe made about someone (a.k.a. Kandi) continuously getting spinoff shows but fans have since speculated that that’s why she enlisted the high profile attorney.

According to Kenya that’s correct, NeNe did indeed hire Lisa Bloom with intentions to sue Truly Original (the production company behind RHOA) and Bravo for “blocking her from getting other deals.”

Kenya found the entire thing to be wholly ridiculous and she made that clear during her convo with Kandi. “You’re not talented,” said Kenya about NeNe, hence why she “doesn’t get other work.”

“She was suing Bravo and True because she felt like they were blocking her from [other work],” said Kenya. “Here’s the thing, nobody is stopping you from getting other work. You’re not talented. You don’t need to be on anyone else’s TV screen doing anything — looking like a complete buffoon. If you could act, if you could dance, if you were pretty — then maybe you could get another opportunity or another show.’

“Buffoon?!” Bloooooooooop!

NeNe has yet to respond to Kenya’s latest shade but you can see them face off (again) tonight during the finale of the RHOA Reunion.

It airs at 8/7 c on Bravo.

American Trilogy

Source: D.L. Chandler / D.L. Chandler

The 21st Century has seen revivals of Prohibition Era cocktails with an almost endless array of twists and turns on the classics. One such modern drink that derived from a whiskey-based cocktail is the American Trilogy, a boozy and inventive take on the Old Fashioned.

The American Trilogy’s journey began in 2007 when Richard Boccato, now of Dutch Kills, and Michael McIlroy, now of Attaboy, both superstars in New York’s bustling cocktail scene, collaborated on the drink while working at Little Branch.

The drink calls for the reportedly all-American trio of bitters, rye, and applejack, which are said to be the country’s oldest spirits. The orange bitters are supposedly the third ingredient that makes the trilogy, but some have questioned their national roots. Brown sugar is typically the sweetener of choice.

My first experience with the American Trilogy was at a Washington, D.C. cocktail bar that I won’t name for reasons I’ll skip, for now, around eight years ago. I was still learning about the various bourbon-based drinks that hailed from the Old Fashioned’s recipe tree, while still seeking that big spirit-forward flavor.

The bartender recommended the American Trilogy and told me the recipe he used, which was one part Rittenhouse rye, which sits at 100 proof, Laird’s Apple Brandy, also sitting at 100 proof, two dashes of old bitters, and a bar spoon of demerara rich simple syrup.

That is essentially the recipe I use today, and while getting the preferred bottle-in-bond (we’ll explain that later) version of Laird’s might be a touch more challenging in comparison to grabbing the 80 proof version, either one works. Rittenhouse is easier to find and a steal considering it’s high quality and low price point. It goes without saying that the all-100 proof version of this drink is the best way to go.

Here’s the American Trilogy recipe:

1 oz rye whiskey

1 oz applejack or Laird’s Apple Brandy

1/4 (or less) rich simple brown sugar syrup (can opt for 1 brown sugar cube muddle and moisten with bitters)

2 dashes orange bitters.

If making with a sugar cube, place in an Old Fashioned glass and saturate it with the two dashes of bitters and muddle into a fine paste. Add the spirits and stir for around 10-15 seconds. Add ice and then take an orange peel and express the oils by gently twisting the skin then tossing into the glass as a garnish.

If you’re not going to go super old school and use the cube, no more than a 1/4oz of the syrup will do. Stir per usual and follow the rest of the recipe.

Enjoy and have a great Memorial Day Weekend. And, as always, sip safely, friends.

Barbers Are Risking It All During COVID-19 Pandemic To Provide Haircuts

Source: Corey Jenkins / Getty

Pockets are hurting due to the COVID-19 shutdown, especially barbers, but they are finding a way to make money even if that means risking their lives.

When shit hit the fan, all non-essential businesses were told to shutter, and that included personal services workers such as barbers, manicurists, and hairstylists. A Gothamist report highlighted the lengths some barbers are going to keep money coming in to support their families during these trying times.

There is no way to properly social distance while cutting someone’s hair. But some barbers do feel to make ends meet, providing illegal haircuts is the only way to go, even if that means possibly catching COVID-19 or being slapped with a fine. One barber the Gothamist spoke to went as far as to cut hair secretly in his Central New Jersey shop in the dark despite the local law authority posting up in front of his barbershop.

Per The Gothamist:

In a Central New Jersey shopping plaza, D. is cutting the hair of a longtime client. His voice, muffled as he makes small talk behind his face mask, and the low buzz of the clippers in his gloved hands, are the only sounds in the air.

The shop is dark, and the television, which is usually blaring, is off because what the barber is doing is illegal, and he doesn’t want to attract the attention of local police. When he finishes, D.—who, like others in this story, did not want to be identified by his full name for fear of fines or jail time —sprays the chair with Lysol and wipes it down.

“I’ve actually had police officers sitting out in front of the shop at times when I’ve been inside,” said the former Marine, who refined his barbering skills on military bases across Europe and the Middle East before opening his own shop more than a decade ago.

A Manhattan barber named Marcus revealed he only makes house calls to clients to support his wife and toddler, but one particular session gave him a huge scare.

“I kept my mask on the whole time. I cut his hair in the bathroom. It was pretty close contact, but I had my gloves on everything that I needed to protect myself at the time, and I gave him a fade, and I left.”

About a week later, Marcos learned on Instagram that the client had COVID-19.

He still continues to risk it all and has even raised his prices to make up for the money he lost due to the coronavirus shutdown.

Retired NFL Star Victor Cruz revealed last month that his barber still comes by his crib to give him cuts stating:”

“I do have my barber come over every other week to cut my hair because I’m on the laptop doing Zoom calls and emails, so I have to make sure I look proper.”

William, a hairstylist and makeup artist Gothamist spoke to for its story, echoed the same sentiments while detailing he installs weaves in basement apartment because he claims his work is essential. He also believes due to the fact people are still working they need to look good during their zoom meetings

These are doctors and lawyers, people who are making deals. They don’t want to be gray on camera. People still want to be beautiful.”

While Florida is allowing barbershops in parts of the state to open, New York and New Jersey are not even considering easing that restriction no time soon. Both states list barbershops as “phase two businesses,” and both NY, NJ have just begun phase one re-openings.

It could be a while till NYC and NJ see barbershops, nail salons, and salons open, so expect more barbers, hairstylists, and nail techs to continue working in secret.

Reginae Carter had YFN Lucci fans livid earlier today after headlines circulated with a supposed quote that made it look like she was taking credit for his fame and success as a rapper. The headline from PageSix sounds tricky and a lot like Weezy’s daughter “put on” her famous ex”.

“Reginae Carter ‘not making nobody famous’ again after YFN Lucci breakup”, was the confusing headline published by PageSix and frankly was getting Reginae DRAGGED online, but she says this isn’t the case at all!

The full quote in her interview reads:

“I’m not bringing no dudes on the show,” Lil Wayne’s daughter Reginae Carter told Page Six months after her breakup with YFN Lucci. “I’m not making nobody famous. I’m not putting nobody on no more.”

It looks a lot like two phrases put together and no Reginae is here to put a stop to ramblings from fans about the misquote. Hit play to hear it.

Vanessa Bryant is suing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after eight of their deputies shared graphic pictures of the deadly helicopter crash scene from the accident that claimed the lives of her loved ones, Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

The bereaved wife filed the claim Friday/ She’s seeking damages for “emotional distress, mental anguish, and invasion of privacy” according to Daily Mail, after the deputies took photos of the aftermath, citing one of the employees even shared the photos with a woman at a bar.

In her claim, Vanessa says she personally requested Sheriff Alex Villanueva to ensure the site be secured for privacy the morning the tragedy occurred, but unfortunately, that request was breeched. The claim states the deputies took photos of the ‘dead children, parents, and coaches’ for their ‘own personal purposes’. SMH. The wife say the negelgence of the deputies have ‘compounded’ her grief.

‘Upon information or belief, sheriff’s deputies shared photos of victims’ remains with individuals unaffiliated with the investigation for their own excitement and sense of self- importance, including one instance where a deputy shared photos to impress a woman at a bar. Mrs. Bryant has suffered an immense tragedy by losing her husband and daughter; her grief has been compounded by the severe emotional distress caused by the sheriff’s deputies’ misconduct and the Sheriff’s Department’s mishandling of that misconduct.’

Vanessa hopes to seek ‘accountability’ by enforcing the lawsuit, documents say.
