Rising Star Chef Omar Tate Wants To Inform & Inspire Through Cooking

Chef Omar Tate is using food to showcase black culture, one meal at a time.

Philadelphia native Tate spent more than 10 years in fine dining establishments, including a Michelin starred restaurant and with the likes of “Top Chef’s” Tom Colicchio.

But after working in white male-dominated kitchens, Tate said he became inspired to create his own unique culinary narrative that pays homage to the Black Experience. He founded the “Honeysuckle” pop up dinner series where he aims to explore African-American heritage through food.

“I use Honeysuckle as a platform to discuss ideas of blackness through food, using art, history and literature to inform those ideas,” Tate said, adding, “We have so much to offer without looking at a piece of fried chicken.”

Visit Philadelphia and the African-American Museum in Philadelphia partnered with the talented young chef for a tasting event and a fundraiser last week at the Farm Neck Country Club in Martha’s Vineyard.

At the benefit, Tate served a crab salad garnished with a sunflower seed puree that washed down with cocktails from black-owned whiskey company Uncle Nearest. He said that the dish was inspired by his memories of hanging out on his stoop as a kid with his family, eating crab and sunflower seeds.

“We all look at food to inform ourselves about the person next to us, Tate said. “And as black people, with all the stigmas around our food, I (want to) use us to define our food and not have our food define us.”

This year’s event theme, “Telling Our Story Through Food,” was one of the ways that the African American Museum works to keep the city’s cultural landscape vibrant, according to museum head Patricia Wilson.

“We’re not only about history, Wilson said. “We are about the now and the future….connecting the food traditions of the South and what’s going on today.”

Museum board member Mike Horsey implored the crowd to support the Smithsonian-affiliated institution for its work in the community and particularly with children.

“Those of you who have gone to HBCU’s understand the need to support our institutions, because of the impact they have on our children. The African-American Museum does a lot in our community…and we need to make sure that this organization is sustained and maintained.”

Seven People Injured In Shooting At Maryland Birthday Party For Two-Year-Old

Shootings are bad wherever they happen, but there’s not much worse than multiple people getting shot at a party for a toddler!

According to NBC Washington, seven people were shot a Prince Georges County apartment complex in the 6200 block of Maxwell Drive in Camp Springs, Maryland at a party for a two year-old.

Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said the shooting victims ranged in age from 18 to 20 years old. Three of them had serious injuries and four of the victims had less serious injuries, Stawinski said. They are all expected to survive, he said.

Stawinksi said about a dozen people were gathered for the party when one person came up and a fight broke out before the shooting.

We’re just glad everyone is expected to survive. What is wrong with people?

Tina Lawson Reacts To Jay Z’s NFL Deal

Tina Lawson’s got something to say. After Jay Z got TRASHED over that NFL social justice deal, his mother-in-law’s commenting. Ms. Tina took to Instagram to drop a note about all the hoopla about her son-in-law working with Roger Goodell. She reposted a pic from a Beyonce/Jay Z fan account that read;

“Meanwhile Jay Z been sending millions of cases of water to Flint and not even saying a word about it. What have these Twitter woke bluechemarks done?”

Oh???

People think this means Ms. Tina’s fully backing Hov and her comments section is on fire with people both either agreeing with her or leaving her harsh criticism.

“First of all people act like he is supposed to save the African American race…. please! People are tearing him down because of his deal with the NFL but still watch football every Monday night, Thursday night and all day Sunday. Both him and his wife have given to numerous charities and organizations, AND have done a lot for their people. People need to stop reaching,” wrote one.

“This NFL situation has nothing to do with Flint. It’s a wonderful thing to be financially able to help others who are in need — no one is taking that away from him. But there’s nothing wrong with people questioning Jay and this deal. He’s not above criticism — no one is,” added another.

What do you think about Ms. Tina’s reaction to Hov’s NFL deal???

City Council Candidate Comments She’d Want To Keep Town A White Community “As Much As Possible”

For all the people who like to believe there’s no such thing as racism… we present to you Jean Cramer, a resident of Marysville, Michigan who is currently one of five candidates running for one of three openings in the town of 10,000…

During a public forum for the candidates on Thursday, August 22, moderator Scott Shigley cited data showing that the community has a population that is around 95% white and asked whether city officials ought to be doing more to bring diversity to Marysville.

Jean Cramer’s response:

“My suggestion… keep Marysville a white community as much as possible.”

She went on, “Seriously, in other words, no foreign-born, no foreign people because of what, in our past, we’ve experienced it’s better to have, simply American-born. Put it that way and no foreigners. No.”

Watch below:

You can see Marysville’s Mayor Pro Tem, Kathy Hayman (wearing red) react physically to Cramer’s remarks. She also immediately makes an effort to express how personally offended she is by the candidate’s words, revealing her father was 100% Syrian and her daughter has a black husband and biracial children.

Candidate Mike Deising commented next stating, “Just checking the calendar here and making sure it’s still 2019. Yeah, I thought we covered civil rights about 50 years ago.”

BUT IF YOU THOUGHT JEAN WAS FINISHED YOU THOUGHT WRIZZONG!

Port Huron Times Herald spoke with Cramer following the forum, asking her to clarify her remark.

Guess what she said?

“What Kathy Hayman doesn’t know is that her family is in the wrong. (A) husband and wife need to be the same race. Same thing with kids. That’s how it’s been from the beginning of, how can I say, when God created the heaven and the earth. He created Adam and Eve at the same time. But as far as me being against blacks, no I’m not.”

In other words, Cramer isn’t “against blacks” BUT she thinks they don’t have any business marrying or procreating with white people. Her ignorance really couldn’t be much louder.

Fortunately Jean Cramer doesn’t speak for all of Marysville. The Mayor has asked that she withdraw her candidacy. Hit the flip to hear him explain why he believes no one who thinks like her should be an elected official.

Just when you thought President Obama couldn’t get any cooler, he does.

Summer’s almost over but the former Head Of State dropped his 2019 Summer Playlist, and it further proves he’s still the coolest guy on the planet.

Lizzo‘s “Juice” made it to number six on the list and the “Truth Hurts” singer couldn’t be happier. Just hours before the dope playlist dropped, she spoke out about how Barack Obama was the first President she ever voted for, tweeting,

“The first President I could ever vote for was Obama. I was so proud of my right to vote and I will never take it for granted. I love us. I’m not sure who I’m voting for yet, but it for damn sure isn’t Trump.”

And one hour later, her entire life was made.

I TWEETED THIS AT 10:26AM AND ONE HOUR LATER PRESIDENT @BarackObama TWEETED ABOUT ME!!! WE’RE FRIENDS NOW I DONT MAKE THE RULES!!!

Long story short, dreams do come true. And Barack Obama is still in the know.

@Fpxmanmusic: So cool that the #Obama’s share their #playlist. Such a classy couple. Can tell that they love each other and have a lot of fun together.

Thanks BO for the Summer tunes. Are any of these on your 2019 playlist?

Black Man Sues Portland Bar For Denying Him Entry Over Jewelry

Black people literally can’t do ANYTHING without drawing the racist ire of white folks.

A Black man, 34-year-old Ray Lamont Peterson, has filed a $500,000 lawsuit against a bar in Portland, Oregon for racist practices against potential Black patrons according to OregonLive.

Peterson was denied entry into Splash Bar back in August of 2018 because he was wearing “too many” diamond chain necklaces. That’s right, his drip was way too hard for the lily-white establishment and the owner was hatin’.

Peterson’s lawsuit claims that Chris Lenahan, one of the owners of Splash Bar, would use a radio to tell security staff to start “arbitrarily enforcing a dress code against African Americans” when he thought the composition of customers was getting “too dark” at any given time. The suit claims that Lenahan referred to black patrons by using racist terms.

Lenhan calls the accusations “ridiculous” and boasts that he has “the most diverse clubs with the most diverse clientele”. Sounds like the same superlative overcompensation that Donald Trump uses to ward off negative criticism. However…

Peterson’s lawsuit was filed Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court — two months after another African American man, Sam Thompson, reached an undisclosed settlement with Lenahan and his company Vegasstars. Thompson claimed that in May 2017 he was told he couldn’t enter another bar that Lenahan is part owner of — the Dirty Nightlife. Thompson claimed he was told he couldn’t enter because he was wearing a red shirt and red shoes and had violated the dress code prohibiting excessively matching gang colors, even though another white customer wearing a nearly identical outfit was later let in.

Yeah, sounds like this Chris dude is a flaming racist. Won’t be surprised at all if he settles this lawsuit too because he knows he’s dead wrong. SMFH.

Lizzo Performs On “The TODAY Show”

Everybody loves Lizzo, even dogs. The entertaining enchantress was a guest performer on The TODAY Show’s Citi Concert Series and requested a special friend be there. Lizzo couldn’t just perform for the NY crowd alone, she actually requested that her pooch pal Tinkerbelle the Dog be by her side.

Lizzo and little Tinkerbelle met for the first time at the Shorty Awards, the Oscars of social media, and the singer and the tiny dog became buddies. Tinkerbelle is a rescue dog who has an Instagram following of over 225K and Lizzo’s songs are often featured in Tinker’s videos.

Lizzo invited Tinkerbelle to be a VIP at her the TODAY Show appearance this morning and the two hung out all morning. In between performances, they took some epic photos and Lizzo kissed her before she went on stage.

Tinkerbelle has much more celebrity clout than you. She’s also kicked it with Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift.

As for Lizzo, she performed her hits “Truth Hurts” and “Juice.”

See more Lizzon on The TODAY Show on the flip.
