Netflix just unveiled the trailer for their latest August Wilson adaptation The Piano Lesson which is produced by Denzel Washington and Todd Black, stars John David Washington alongside Danielle Deadwyler and Samuel L. Jackson and marks the directorial debut of Malcolm Washington.

Malcolm Washington, who also co-wrote this adaptation, penned a beautiful director’s statement about the project which was posted to Tudum. Here’s a small excerpt:

“I honor the spirit of August Wilson and the legacy he left behind for all of us. A legacy that thrives in the power of Danielle Deadwyler’s Berniece, the dynamism of John David Washington’s Boy Willie, and the understated brilliance that is Samuel L. Jackson’s Doaker.

Every family has a history, stories from the past that inform the present; an origin story. Ultimately this story is much bigger than me and my family — it, like the Black American experience, is an interconnected web of stories that span space and time. I hope that when audiences experience our film, they see themselves on the screen and hear the voices of their ancestors calling to them, offering peace and protection.”

For those of y’all not familiar with the plot of The Piano Lesson, here’s the synopsis:

A battle is brewing in the Charles Household. At the center stands a prized heirloom piano tearing two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Danielle Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.

Bye, Bye Bennifer! Jennifer Lopez Files For Divorce From Ben Affleck On Their Anniversary, Actor Reportedly Didn’t Show ‘Any Interest’ In Fixing Marriage

After months of rumors about the demise of their relationship, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are officially headed for divorce.

Following multiple reports that Affleck was checked out of their marriage and on the verge of ending things, J.Lo was the one to pull the trigger. The singer and actress filed for divorce on Tuesday, Aug. 20, which is the second anniversary of their wedding in Georgia. The pair legally married a month before that in Las Vegas on July 17, 2022.

After rekindling their romance two decades after their first breakup, things are officially over for the couple, once again. Not only that, they’ve been over for a while, with Lopez listing their date of separation as April 26, 2024, in her divorce filing.

According to reports from PEOPLE, a source revealed that J.Lo “was done waiting” to make the call to end their marriage, which is why she self-filed for divorce on Tuesday.

“She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken,” the source explained. “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

Lopez is mom to 16-year-old twins Emme and Max with ex Marc Anthony, while Ben Affleck has three children — Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 — with ex-wife Jennifer Garner. Despite their relationship woes over the past two years, both parties did seem to get close to one another’s kids.

Another insider told the publication that while the singer tried everything to repair their marriage, her husband didn’t put in that same effort.

“She’s very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn’t given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage,” the insider explained to PEOPLE. “He hasn’t shown any commitment and interest in making their marriage work. It’s gotten to the point that she just needs to look out for herself.”

As for why Lopez chose to file for divorce on their wedding anniversary, it seems symbolic of her willingness to move on.

“She was done waiting and the date she did it speaks a ton,” a source tells the outlet, going on to say the move “gives her control of the process…It’s good that she did it.”

J.Lo and Ben gave their romance another shot in April 2021, nearly 20 years after they first dated and became engaged before calling off their wedding.

They went on to make their romance official just a few months later in July 2021, and while Lopez admitted that the two of them “had a little bit of fear” about dating in the limelight again, she told PEOPLE in 2022 that she feels “so lucky and happy and proud to be with him. It’s a beautiful love story that we got a second chance.”

Sadly, it looks like the second chance didn’t end up going any differently than the first.

We knew that the 2024 Democratic National Convention was going to be a joyous affair but after just two days, the enthusiasm and excitement have far exceeded our expectations. Last night, the crowd inside of the United Center in Chicago reached new levels as each state participated in a roll call to the sounds of DJ Cassidy and one legendary appearance by the King of Crunk himself, Lil Jon.

It should also be mentioned that Kendrick Lamar’s ubiquitous diss track “Not Like Us” and several other classic West Coast tracks were booming through the arena speakers as representatives from the state of California pledged their votes for VP Harris to be the Democratic nominee.

Never in a million years did we think we’d see this type of partying happening at the DNC. It made the RNC look like a MAGA funeral, perhaps it was. The vibey roll call set the stage for Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff to deliver a heartfelt and emotional speech about his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris.

That man loves him some Kamala Harris and it shows. We can’t help but notice that the party that believes they have a monopoly on “family values” is never seen publicly being enamored with their partners. Interesting.

Following Emhoff’s remarks, the main event was set to begin and you could feel how ready the people were to hear what Forever First Lady Michelle Obama had to say. She said a LOT. However, there was one part in particular that really got the people going. For a little over 60 seconds, Mrs. Obama took a bubbling pan of fish grease and fried up a filet of Trump that was so pointed that the internet laid it over Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss “Meet The Grahams.”

“For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us,” said Michelle according to NewsOne. “See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black. I want to know — I want to know — who’s going to tell him, who’s going to tell him, that the job he is currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs?”

Finally, batting clean-up, President Obama took the stage and reminded us all of his extraordinary ability to effectively communicate multiple messages while seamlessly weaving in and out of tones and cadences.

The Democrats are two for two so far but as the Obamas reminded America, this election isn’t about energy, excitement, concerts, nor conventions, it’s about votes. Are you ready to cast your ballot? Are your friends and family ready? If not, it’s your job to prepare them. Go do the work.

Dame Dash Says Whoever Bids $10M For ‘Reasonable Doubt’ Will Receive An ‘Original’ Roc-A-Fella Chain

Dame Dash is sweetening the pot for bidders of his Roc-A-Fella shares and offering an original Roc-A-Fella chain as an extra incentive.

As previously reported, despite being one of the three founding members of  Roc-A-Fella Records, Dame Dash is alone on an island.

On Monday, Dame Dash once again tried to sell his shares on Instagram but this time with a catch; whoever can offer up $10M for his slice of the Roc-A-Fella Records pie will receive an original Roc-A-Fella chain.

“If you do wanna buy one-third of Roc-A-Fella Inc. you are gonna have to bring some bread, and anything over 10 million, I’m gonna sweeten the pot,” said Dame. “You get an original Roc-A-Fella chain from off my neck. ‘Cause I was the only one that gave out Roc-A-Fella chains when Roc-A-Fella really existed. If I don’t give you the chain it’s not a legit Roc-A-Fella chain. You get one of these, this is legit. This is the old-school one from off my neck. You know like when I took one off my neck and gave one to Kanye, Cam’ron, all that.”

Dame tried to pull at the heartstrings by mentioning Kanye West and Cam’Ron but likely that will not be enough for $10M. US Marshalls will host an auction for the shares on August 29 with minimum bids starting at $1.2M.

Honestly, Dame Dash asking for an extra $9M might be the most Dame thing we’ve ever heard of.

Ayan then explains that their sisterhood with Lesa has been a bit fractured, but Stanbury tells her not to worry.

“You and Lesa are so close that if you can’t get over this, you’ve got bigger problems,” says the housewife in a bit of ironic foreshadowing.

BOSSIP Exclusive: Mike Colter Says ‘The Union’ Spoilers Are Safe With Him

BOSSIP Sr. Content Director Janeé Bolden spoke with Mike Colter about his latest role as Nick Faraday in The Union. He spoke about his character’s prickly side, keeping spoilers a secret and how he decides which stunts to perform.

As you can see from the trailer, Colter’s character Nick is a man who is about that action. But it turns out he’s also hiding something!

“He’s a man who’s got a little secret,” Colter teased. “We all figure out what it is later but he’s stirring the action and I think he’s having fun with it. He’s a bit of a — he’s a little prickly and so I have fun with that because I think being unlikable sometimes is fun. I think also being someone who’s a little selfish is fun.”

While Nick Faraday adds quite the twist to The Union plot, Colter told us that he was up for the challenge of keeping mum about his character’s secrets.

“It’s a little difficult but I think as long as there’s other things in and around the plot points to talk about, I think it’s pretty easy,” Colter told Bossip. “I think there’s so much fun to be had when I was on the locations shooting and just the idea of the character that there’s lots to talk about in that way. I’m the perfect person to keep a secret because I have no problems keeping quiet about anything. It was not a problem. I can keep things for a very long time, trust me!”

Sounds like Colter is EXACTLY the man to trust. Speaking of trust, Colter also told us that while he felt capable of performing most of his own stunts in The Union, ultimately he found it wiser to leave some of them to his double.

“We all wanted to do our own stunts,” Colter said, of himself and co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. “We did them in certain takes and then they would always do another take with the stunt person but I’d always watch the final edit to see who they use and and things like that. I was always game. I’m like look, ‘I stay in shape. I’m ready. I like to flip and run. If I can’t do it or I don’t feel comfortable I will tell you.’ I’m not that person to say, ‘Oh I can do that,’ and I really don’t feel comfortable doing it. I have limits and I will do whatever it is that I feel like is right for me within reason because there’s a certain point where the audience can’t see your face anyway so there’s no payoff, right? There’s a moment where he goes into the water. I could have easily done that, but from a distance they would have showed it you couldn’t tell whether it was going to be me or the double so why do it?”

We definitely respect that!

Colorado Man Receives 143 Years In Prison For Pulling Gun On Burger King Worker Who Wouldn’t Take Drugs As Payment

A Colorado man who pulled a gun on a Burger King employee for refusing to accept drugs as payment recently received an extremely long sentence.

Critical thinking is usually nowhere to be found in the world of crime, but some crimes are so incredibly foolish they feel made up. At the top of the dumbest criminals list you will find some legendary mess-ups and unorganized behavior making the authorities’ jobs easy.

According to KOAA News 5, a Colorado man may have taken the crown for the most reckless criminal motive ever. On Oct. 17, 2022, Eugene Robertson pulled out a gun in the drive-thru of a Denver Burger King because a worker wouldn’t accept drugs as a form of payment.

After pointing the gun at the worker, investigators reported that Robertson continued to cause chaos around town, and he’s been sentenced to 143 years in prison for his disturbing behavior.

“We consider this 143-year sentence justice for the multiple victims he put in fear that night. Jurors recognized the severity of the crimes this defendant committed. We believe the judge imposed an appropriate sentence,” Eric Ross, a spokesperson for 18th Judicial District Attorney John Kellner, said Friday.

Robertson was found guilty of 17 crimes with eight of those being attempted murder. Before his arrest, Robertson walked into a store across the street and pointed a gun at a cashier before shooting a security camera and shooting at two people outside of the store.

Considering the havoc this Ohio man-caused, the lofty sentence might be justified.

We admire Sony’s dedication to the Spider-Man villainverse (Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom: The Last Dance, and Morbius) that now includes Kraven the Hunter who pounces into action in the visceral origin story of one our friendly neighborhood’s web-slinger’s most formidable foes.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays primal prowler Kraven–“a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father Nikolai Kravinoff starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared,” per the official synopsis.

One of a handful of Rated-R comic book films, Sony is rumored to be confident that the violent film with match the success of the popular Venom films.

“You just think, ‘What the f*** have I just read?’ That’s the kind of character I’m playing. But then, a lot of the people who grew up with Marvel are old enough now to watch an R-rated movie,” Johnson told Rolling Stone.

“Taking on a Sony/Marvel movie is a different challenge altogether,” he continues. “There’s the story, the character, the role; that’s one thing. But then you also step into a world where you’re dealing with a studio and a franchise — or possible franchises, though let’s not get ahead of ourselves. So, they’re rolling the dice on me, in a sense, which is a lovely thing. But you’ve got to appease the studio, please the audience and do what’s dignified for you as an actor. I find all of that super challenging.”

Bench, Please! Detroit Judge Kenneth King Suspended Over Handcuffing Homeless Teen For Sleeping In Sunken ‘Scared Straight’ Shenanigans

According to ABC News, the incident involves a 15-year-old girl named Eva Goodman, who was subjected to a humiliating abuse of power when King demanded to restrain and dress her like a prisoner. The unjust judge doubled down on berating Goodman about sleeping at home in her bed even after her mother revealed that the girl didn’t have those.

This wasn’t just an isolated incident. It’s part of a disturbing pattern of behavior that started long before his temporary removal from the bench. However, critics argue that the consequences are not nearly enough, especially given his track record.

A Judge On A Power Trip

The latest incident occurred during a field trip organized by the nonprofit Greening of Detroit. ABC News states that Eva Goodman, a teenager without a permanent home, was understandably exhausted and fell asleep in the courtroom.

Instead of handling the situation with the empathy one might expect from a public servant, Judge King decided to make an example out of her. He forced her into a jail uniform and handcuffs in front of her peers. He claimed that he wanted to “get through to her” about the seriousness of courtroom behavior.

“I wanted this to look and feel very real to her, even though there’s probably no real chance of me putting her in jail,” King said.

Seems as if he suggests the courtroom is a stage for life lessons rather than a place of justice. But this isn’t the first time Judge King has been accused of letting his position go to his head.

A History Of Judge King’s Sunken Shadiness

This latest incident is just one more example of King’s history of questionable decisions on the bench. According to some ‘X’ users, his career track record is full of harsh and often inappropriate treatment of individuals in his courtroom. These past incidents made many question whether he’s more interested in exerting his power than upholding the law.

Previously reported by BOSSIP, he has also let killer cops walk without a trial. Somehow the need for heavy-handed lessons, or at least a day in court, didn’t apply to a Detroit cop punching a 70-year-old Black man to death. This pattern of behavior challenges King’s impartiality and track record. Critics question how he rules fairly while turning his courtroom into a personal fiefdom where he dispenses humiliation and intimidation.

Goodman’s Mother Calls King A “Big Bully” As He’s Suspended From Court For “Training”

Following the public outcry over his treatment of Eva Goodman, King was temporarily removed from the bench and required to undergo “necessary training.” 

However, he will continue to be paid during this period. That fact has not gone unnoticed by those who feel his actions warrant a more severe penalty. In ABC News, Judge William McConico, the court’s chief judge, stated that King’s actions “do not reflect this commitment [to providing access to justice in an environment free from intimidation or disrespect].” 

Yet, for many, the fact that King is still drawing a paycheck while being “trained” raises serious questions about the accountability of those in positions of power.

Latoreya Till, Eva Goodman’s mother, did not mince words in her reaction to King’s actions. 

“My daughter is hurt. She is feeling scared,” Till said, calling King a “big bully” who abused his authority in a way that left lasting emotional scars on her daughter. The distraught mother launched a GoFundMe campaign to secure permanent housing for herself and her children.

Marissa Ebersole Wood, chairperson of Greening of Detroit, also weighed in, criticizing King’s methods.

 “Although the judge was trying to teach a lesson of respect, his methods were unacceptable. The group of students should have been simply asked to leave the courtroom if he thought they were disrespectful,” Wood said. 

In an interview with WXYZ-Detroit, Till tearfully broke down about King criminalizing and traumatizing her daughter for struggling without a permanent home.

“Would you want someone to treat your child like that? Would you even treat your child like that if he fell asleep in a courtroom?” the single mother asked. 

“The fact that he was talking about ‘you go home and get your bed.’ How do you know my baby got a home? How do you know my baby got a bed, her own bed that she can sleep in? She don’t have that right now so she was tired,” Till continued.

King doubled down on his Scared Straight tactics to the news outlet.

“Do I have any reservations? Do I think I was heavy-handed in what I did? No, I don’t because I’ll do whatever needs to be done to reach these kids to ensure they don’t end up in front of me. So that was my own version of Scared Straight,” he smugly said.

The recent SCOTUS ruling to make homelessness illegal will force innocent people like Goodman into the prison pipeline. This incident makes King look more aligned with judges like Clarence Thomas, criminalizing the most vulnerable than keeping them out of the system.

Wayne State University Terminates Judge Kenneth King’s Teaching Job 

In Detroit, where communities already feel the strain of systemic injustice, King’s actions serve as a painful reminder that those who are supposed to uphold the law are sometimes the very ones who undermine it. And another institution is already distancing itself from the judge.

The Detroit Free Press reports Wayne State University ended King’s employment as an adjunct professor. The school snatched two of King’s classes set to start this fall, “The Judicial Process” and “Criminal Procedure: Investigation.”

“In light of the 36th District Court’s temporary suspension of Judge Kenneth King, Wayne State University has reassigned two Fall 2024 courses to other instructors,” spokesman Bill Roose announced.

Judge Kenneth King’s behavior represents a larger problem within the judicial system, where judges often operate with impunity, even when their actions violate ethical standards. 

King’s removal from the bench and the classroom is a start but is far from a real solution.
