It was just a normal Summer day in 2011…

Drake had the year on lock when it came to number one records on the radio. “Im On One” was still bumping through everyone’s speakers…

We hadn’t heard from Hov since Blueprint 3 at the time, and never imagined he’d do a collab album — let alone with Kanye West

We were still waiting for him to do an album with Bey!

But then, on July 20, 2011, Hov and Ye’ dropped “Otis”. And the streets haven’t been the same since.

The video was so 2011 that Aziz Ansari was lowkey the star of it. In his 2011 comedy special, the actor recalled:

“My favorite part was when every once in a while, somebody would be in the kitchen making a drink and they’d make a little noise, and Kanye would jump up and yell, ‘Yo! Shut the f— up! Homey’s over here trying to tell some jokes!’ Which is the best thing anybody has ever yelled at a comedy show.”

Kanye and Jay may be in a totally different space in their relationship today — but let’s honor the moment they made us all Watch The Throne, and changed the way we view collab albums and hip hop today.

Happy Birthday, “Otis”.

Megan Thee Stallion Drops ‘Hot Girl Summer’ Playlist

At first, the Hot Girl vs. Hot Boy Summer thing started out as a joke. That was until Future took it upon himself to take on the title as Head Coach of the Hot Boys.  Now, judging by by folks on social media, it’s officially a competition to see who will come out on top at the end of the Summer.

Even though Hot Girl originator Megan Thee Stallion tried to put an end to the game, the Hot Boys just couldn’t stand to see Hot Girls enjoying themselves.

Future went as far as to create his very own Hot Boy playlist on Spotify.

But H-Town Hottie Meg wasn’t too fazed.

She dropped a playlist of her own shortly after, officially making it a competition between Hot Girls and Hot Boys for the rest of the Summer.

Looks like Hot Girls are up 10.

Iggy Azalea

Oh Iggy Azalea

How thou accent changes so greatly.

The Australian rapper recently dropped the visuals for her song “Fu** It Up” and it’s filled with more accents than a World Cup tournament.

Granted, Iggy is paying homage to a 1990s high school classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. So her accent in the video’s intro utilizes some sort of Valley girl-Australian mix…clearly a long way from the Southern rap twang of her early days.

Then, once Iggy starts chanting “fu** it up, sis” with Kash Doll (“sis?”…okay Iggy), her accent switches to some sort of East Coast, New York-Philly mix?

Idk.

This woman will have you confused.

[embedded content]

Even her hair styles throughout the video are questionable. The colorful wet and wavy look has already been done to great effect by Nicki Minaj.

The barbz would gag…and not in a dope “oh she’s fierce” kind of way.

[embedded content]

You gotta give it to Iggy though…her production value is top notch. Aside from the questionable accents, appropriated lingo, and last season hair looks, the colorful video is quite entertaining. Plus, the beat is knocking.

And I appreciate anyone who acknowledges the greatness of certain white girl comedy classics. Let’s not forget Iggy’s commendable visuals for “Fancy,” which paid homage to 1995’s Clueless.

*Sigh*

I guess, Iggy gon’ do what Iggy gon’ do as long as people support her.

Fu** it up *ahem*……….sis.

Honda Stage Celebrates The Music of FOX's 'Star' - Arrivals

The worst thing about getting hooked on a television show is that you never know when it’s going to end forever.

Fans of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It had to grieve the loss of their favorite Netflix show on Thursday after it was announced that the streaming network decided to cancel the series.

Needless to say, fans weren’t “having it”.

This isn’t the first time one of our shows got the ax way before it was time. It’s still hard to get over the fact that FOX cancelled Star

Why does it seem like the good, cultural shows get snipped before any of the others? Even back in the 90’s — Friends ran on NBC for 10 long seasons, which means 10 long years. Even these days, before being dropped by Netflix, it’s one of the most raved about shows in television history.

Meanwhile, Living Single, which arguably set the blueprint for a show like friends to even exist, was cancelled after five years and didn’t even get a proper last season.

But again, we’ve seen these types of situations play out again and again. Especially with Netflix.

Hit the flip for more shows of the culture that got cancelled way too damn soon.

Netflix'x FYSEE Event For "When They See Us"

Source: Presley Ann / Getty

The powerful and devastating Netflix mini-series When They See Us is getting all the shine this Emmy season.

The project — which covers the life of five New York teens who were falsely convicted on rape and assault charges — was nominated for a whopping 16 Emmys.

Helmed by filmmaker extraordinaire Ava DuVernay, the series earned Emmy nods for Jharrel Jerome in Lead Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie and Niecy Nash for Lead Actress in a Limited Series. The show also earned a Best Limited Series nomination.

Although the lead actors are rightfully getting their praise, another standout role came from 17-year-old Asante Blackk who played a young Kevin Richardson. Blackk’s performance as a helpless kid being harassed and interrogated by the police earned him an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie nomination.

With his recent recognition, Blackk has a promising career and we’ll definitely be witnessing his talents in the future.

Before Blackk hits megastar status, hit the flip for five facts you might not have known about the stellar performer.

One Sheet For 'Space Jam'

Source: John D. Kisch/Separate Cinema Archive / Getty

If you were a fan of the 1996 kids classic Space Jam, you probably already know that the flick is getting a sequel for a new generation.

LeBron James and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler serve as producers for Space Jam 2, which is set to hit theaters on July 16, 2021, according to Deadline. Art house director Terence Nance was initially set to direct the project, but now Deadline reports that he’s been swapped out for Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee.

Sources say Nance’s departure was friendly and he left because of creative differences with the studio/producers. However, one must wonder if the studio essentially didn’t trust an indie director with experimental tendencies.

Nance is known for unconventional movies like 2012’s An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, which mixes animation and live action to tell a love story.

[embedded content]

Then, in 2018, Nance garnered more critical acclaim with his HBO series Random Acts of Flyness, which also mixed live action, animation and other unconventional forms of filmmaking to cover topics of race, gender and politics in America.

[embedded content]

With such an experimental approach to filmmaking, Nance could have provided a fresh take on Space Jam, one that was innovative yet still entertaining for the fans. Now that Terrence is out and Malcolm D. Lee is in, things could change drastically.

Where Lee might lack in experimentation, he makes up for in strong narratives with box office success. This is the same man behind 1999’s The Best Man, which grossed over $34 million on a $9 million budget. Lee also led a little movie called Girls Trip, which went on to gross over $140 million worldwide with a production budget of $28 million.

[embedded content]

While Nance might bring fresher ideas to Space Jam, Lee can no doubt create a character-driven movie that could impact a wider audience.

If only we could be in the board room to peep which ideas Nance was pitching vs. Lee. Guess we’ll have to wait and find out if Lee is the perfect man for the job.

What do you think of the switch up? Are you here for Lee or do you think they should’ve given Nance a chance?

Dorion Renaud

Remember back in the day when reality tv stars weren’t taken seriously in Hollywood? Casting agents and directors were not checking for folks who were known just for being known. But my oh my, how the tables have turned. These days, the big wigs in Hollywood are actively seeking out folks from social media and reality television, whether they have talent or not.

Fortunately, there are a select few who’ve parlayed their 15 minutes of reality fame into a lucrative, sustainable career. Dorion Renaud is one of those stars whose talent was much too big to be placed in one box. He acts, he sings, he models. The true definition of an artist.

With three shows on Yahoo and his role on ‘In The Cut’, it’s safe to say that Dorion is booked and busy these days.

[embedded content]

With a star studded cast like this, Dorion’s career as an actor can only go up from here. He plays hairdresser Percy on the Bounce TV show, alongside acting greats like Kelita Smith, Dorien Wilson, Jackèe Harry and more.

[embedded content]

I spoke with the actor about everything from his new skin care line Buttah to his transition from reality tv to acting.

On Transitioning Into Acting After College Hill

“It was actually kind of hard, because when I did College Hill, that was a time when reality tv wasn’t as huge as it is now. I had to kind of change my name after, because people didn’t take me serious even though I had serious training. It was tough. I had to put the work in. Even with ‘In The Cut’, it wasn’t easy. But I’m glad I did it and got a little bit of a name for myself. And it’s funny because the director had no idea that I’ve ever done a reality show. So I was happy that I was able to impress him without him knowing that I was on a reality show. “

On Advice From Lauren London

Dorion Renaud

Source: presley Ann/ Stringer / Getty

“Before I do anything involving acting, I run it by Lauren. Cause she’s been doing it so long. We go over my lines. She encourages me. Facetimes me when I’m on set. Anytime I need any advice regarding business, she’s the first person I go to. I’m so thankful to have her in my life. I hope we get to work together one of these days. I would want both of us to play like some gangster sh**. Something edgy and cool, but vulnerable.”

On Getting Into The Beauty Business

“People have a hard time believing that I had troubled skin growing up. When I started modeling and had to wear makeup all day, and at the end of the day, i would look at my skin. I’d see so much hyperpigmentation. Then i realized that there was a space open, for African Americans and skin care. I would go in Nordstroms and all these high end retailers and I couldn’t find anything that was good for my skin. And I felt that [African Americans] deserve to be the face of beauty, and skin care as well. So Buttah really came from the heart. I’m glad that it’s doing well.”

On Life Lessons

“Trust your gut. Do not do anything for your peers. Do it for the people that look up to you and care. You have to move with purpose. You have to listen to your intuition. Move with purpose, move with vision and stay true to what you love.”

Check out Dorion’s skin care line Buttah at Buttahskin.com, and catch him on ‘In The Cut’ when season 5 premieres Monday on Bounce TV.

Overview of New York city

Source: Visions Of Our Land / Getty

They call New York the greatest city in the world for a reason. The city itself is always up and on, and the people are all looking for their next come up.

NYC is the city of hustlers. There’s a singer, dancer, designer, actor or artist at every corner and on every train car. And don’t think for a second that the hustle stops when something out of the ordinary comes along and disturbs the peace.

On Saturday, there was a blackout in Manhattan that affected more than 72,000 New Yorkers along 30 blocks from Times Square to the Upper West Side. Mayor Bill de Blasio said police confirmed there was no foul play involved and that the outage was caused by a “mechanical issue.” Fun fact, the outage came 42 years to the day after The Great Blackout of 1977.

Fortunately there were no reports of people getting hurt or losing their ish. Judging by footage of the incidents, it looks like the streets were still pretty lit without lights — no pun intended. And the outage certainly didn’t stop these New Yorkers from coming together and spreading their love and talent all over the city.

Ladies and gents, this is an example of what America could be.

WNBA Legend Now Coaching For Big3’s Triplets Team

She’s an Olympic champion, a three-time WNBA MVP and is considered one of the greatest ballers to ever hit the court.

And iconic athlete Lisa Leslie is back in the game, but this time she’s making moves from the sidelines. The six foot five Compton, CA native is now coaching the Big3 basketball league’s Triplets and will lead her team this weekend as they face off against the Tri-State.

“Being part of the Big3 has been more than I’ve ever dreamed of,” Leslie told us. “I saw it and I watched it as a fan, and to be part of the Big3 family – I kind of get choked up because I never thought that I would really coach.”

Leslie was honored Friday at Toyota’s Women of Big3 Power Luncheon at the MoCada Museum in Brooklyn, where she spoke about her new role and how basketball impacted her life. Also honored was Big3 chairwoman Amy Trask and Big3 head coach Nancy Lieberman.

Leslie – who played 12 seasons with the WNBA and was the first female baller to dunk on live TV – said she’s relishing her new role as a coach, writing scouting reports, going over games to find weak spots and mentoring the players.

And when she was asked about what it was like to coach a team of male athletes, Leslie said that it’s not a big deal.

“It’s just been so much fun,” she said. “It’s been thrilling – I always say it’s like playing chess and playing dominoes and playing spades all at the same time. If you’ve ever played any of those, you kind of understand the strategy of it, the energy of it, the fight of it – the passion.”
