Today, four seems to be the lucky number thanks to some major season renewals for FX shows.

First, Snowfall will receive a fourth season, according to Shadow and Act. The news was announced on Tuesday just weeks after the third season premiered. The drama series — created by John Singleton, Eric Amadio and Dave Andron — follows the rise of drug kingpin Franklin Saint (played by Damson Idris) and the coinciding crack epidemic in South Central Los Angeles.

The presidents of FX Entertainment’s Original Programming, Nick Grad and Gina Balian, explained:

Snowfall has continued its creative leap forward this season with the hard work and contributions of John Singleton and the brilliant performance of Damson Idris. We are grateful to Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Walter Mosley for honoring John’s legacy through their commitment to building on the artistic excellence of Snowfall with a fourth season on FX.”

Meanwhile, the beloved Donald Glover series Atlanta will also come back for a fourth season…and the third season hasn’t even started production yet.

Similar to season three, the fourth season will have eight episodes. Both seasons are expected to be shot in Spring 2020, supposedly making use of the stars’ availability.

Eric Schrier, President of FX Entertainment, told Shadow and Act:

“What more can be said about Atlanta than the critical acclaim and accolades that Donald, Paul, Dianne, Stephen and Hiro have earned for two exceptional seasons of what is clearly one of the best shows on television. This group of collaborators and cast have created one of the most original, innovative stories of this generation and we are proud to be their partners.”

It seems we’ll get more laughs and weirdness out of Earn (Donald Glover) and Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) — two cousins trying to navigate adulthood and the music scene in Atlanta.

Can’t wait!

Red Bull Dance Your Style has been an ongoing competition across major U.S. cities where dancers showcase their unique ways of moving while audience members decide who has the best performance. The winners will compete in the U.S. National Final in Las Vegas for a chance to compete in the World Final in Paris, France in October. When the competition stopped by New Orleans, it was only right that bounce music made an appearance and who better to represent for the culture than the Queen Diva herself, Big Freedia.

Considering bounce music’s rich history and the twerk dancing that accompanies it, you’d think that someone would represent their booty-shaking abilities in the competition. But if you let Big Freedia tell it, twerking requires more skill than you’d imagine.

Before her high energy performance, I talked with the New Orleans native who continues to set the bar for herself even after a successful reality show, a Guinness World Record, and a collaboration with Beyoncé and Drake. Freedia has some major projects in the works and she also has a few thoughts when it comes to gyrators like Odell Beckham Jr. and “Twerk” video stars like City Girls. Similar to past critical comments about Miley Cyrus‘ twerking, Freedia won’t hold her tongue when it comes to the celebrated artform.

Thank you for talking with us, first of all.

No problem.

So starting off, Odell Beckham Jr. — a New Orleans native — recently did an interview with GQ where he had to address speculation that he was gay, mostly because of videos he’s taken or because of how he always dances with guy friends…

Why? ‘Cause in New Orleans we bounce. The boys show the hustle. All the stuff that Odell do, all the boys do here and you don’t have to question their sexuality because it’s apart of the culture. It’s not like he’s up there shaking his ass, so I don’t see what’s wrong with it.

Were there any men you looked up to growing up who kind of helped you be more free or was it always just a culture thing?

Definitely. I mean, all the guys who danced for DJ Jubilee, they would twerk. They would like really pop like girls and get on their heads and put their legs in the air. They took it to the next level. And I was like man, if these boys can get out here and do it, everybody should feel okay. And the boys had many girlfriends, they had all the h*s behind them (laughter). That’s who gave a lot of inspiration to a lot of us in New Orleans.

Is there anyone currently who would go in your twerk hall of fame?

Everybody loves Megan Thee Stallion. I mean, I haven’t really seen Meg twerk but once on Instagram. But yea she would get the title right now. It sure ain’t the City Girls. I mean they just don’t twerk. They got a hot song but they don’t twerk.

Even with Cardi B in the “Twerk” video?

I mean I love Cardi. She twerks down. Yea, that’s my girl.

Are you interested in doing more T.V. and movies?

Most definitely. I’m working on getting back to my T.V. world. I just went and had a lot of meetings for my new shows that I’m pitching.

If someone was to do the Big Freedia movie, who would you want in your cast? Or who would be the writer and director?

All the best. I mean you know, if it’s something epic like that, you want to have the best of the best. I am working on the Big Freedia stage play so that’s the first thing before we get to the movie.

Any more details you can spill on that?

Amazing cast. I just did a casting call with all the amazing cast. I’m really excited about this. I was in tears crying. I don’t know if you saw it when I posted it on Instagram, but that day I did it, they had me in tears. It was very powerful and it’ll touched a lot of people.

And lastly, how do you feel about Red Bull Dance Your Style coming to New Orleans and what do you look forward to the most tonight?

I mean I love Red Bull. They support everything that I do. They always support music and they’re always pushing music, which is a great thing. And tonight I’m expecting to see some amazing dancers and to have a good time and to turn out.

The fact that the World Wide Web turns 28 years old today either means Millennials are getting old, the Internet is young as hell in the grand scheme of things, or that so much has happened in those 28 years that it feels like we’ve been surfing the web for a lifetime. Which is low key kind of the case if you’re 28 and younger.

On August 6, 1991 British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee published the first-ever website while working at a huge particle physics lab in Switzerland. Berners-Lee observed how tough it was to keep track of the projects and computer systems of the lab’s thousands of researchers, who were spread around the globe; so he created a solution.

Then by the end of 1990, Lee, using a Steve Jobs-designed NeXT computer, developed the key technologies that are the bedrock of the Web, including Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), for creating Web pages and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Thus the first ever website was born and the beginning of the Web as a publicly available service on the Internet arrived on August 6, 1991.

Internet aside, the world was a very different place back then than it is now. Sure the web has many percs, like keeping people in the know, getting information instantly, and staying connected to people from all across the globe. However, people did actually communicate verbally back then. Looked folks in the eyes while walking down the street, instead of having their head down on the phones. SMH.

But different things for different generations I guess. Interestingly enough, the birth of the web wasn’t the most riveting thing about that year:

A gallon of gas in 1991 was just $1.12.

The average monthly rent for Americans was $495.00, compared to 2019 where the average American’s monthly rent is $1,085.

One of the most popular cases of Police Brutality was recorded on video camera in the case of Rodney King.

Whitney Houston owned the music charts.

George H.W. Bush was President.

And Donald Trump was exposed as his own PR guy.

Looks some things don’t change after all. SMH.  At least we got Black Twitter out of all this. Thanks, Mr. Lee.

Before Halle Bailey takes the crown as Princess Ariel in the Disney remake The Little Mermaid, ABC will put on a live special of the musical called The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!

According to Deadline, Moana star Auli’i Cravalho will play Ariel, while Queen Latifah takes on Ursula and Shaggy will be Sebastian. The show will mark the classic animated movie’s 30th anniversary and will feature a mixture of live action, animation and puppetry.

ABC’s President of Entertainment, Karey Burke, has expressed major support for live specials and according to her, if The Little Mermaid Live! works, “I expect we will do more of them and we will work closely with the feature department about timing.” If you’re here for the live rendition, make sure you mark your calendar for its debut November 5!

Also on the horizon at ABC is an anthology series recognizing the women of the Civil Rights Movement. With the working title Women of the Movement, the series will chronicle an important time in American history as told by the women who led the way. Marissa Jo Cerar, who wrote on The Handmaid’s Tale, will lead the project as a writer and the producing team includes Will Smith, Jay-Z and Aaron Kaplan.

The first season will consist of eight episodes inspired by the book Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement by Devery S. Anderson. It will follow Emmett Till‘s mother, Mamie Till, who spent her life seeking justice for her son’s murder in the Jim Crow South. It’s definitely an important story to be told, along with the many other women who dedicated their life to racial justice.

We’ll keep you updated as more info surfaces about the series.

Lena Waithe‘s passion project Twenties is headed for BET and the series is already getting a touch of star talent.

In an interview with Variety, Waithe revealed that rapper Big Sean is joining the cast. The eight episode half-hour series will explore the many adventures of Hattie, a Black queer girl, and her two straight best friends, Marie and Nia, who occupy most of their time talking ‘ish’ and chasing their dreams. The show will explore themes of love, friendship, and messing everything up along the way.

It’s yet to be revealed what role Big Sean will play in the show, other than his character’s name is Tristan. He’ll be joining a cast of rising stars, including Christina Elmore, Gabrielle Graham, Sophina Brown,  and Jonica “JoJo” T. Gibbs who plays Hattie. According to Waithe, Sean was a natural at acting:

“There was a character, Tristan, we had written that made me think of him. I didn’t even make him read for it, I knew he’d be right. He’s so natural. He’s so good. He’s easy on the eyes, as we all know. The ladies are going to get a kick out of watching him on screen.”

Guess we can expect the acting chops and sex appeal from Sean.

In the movie world, Ava DuVernay is gearing up for her major comic book adaption New Gods.

DuVernay did a Twitter Q&A on Tuesday and fans were desperate for more info on the flick based on the DC Comics series. With her answers, it was revealed that the iconic DC villain Darkeid will be apart of the movie, along with his loyal female warriors The Female Furies. A villain turned hero who defected from the Furies, Big Barda, will also be apart of the movie.

“How could any self-respecting Barda fan not include the The Furies?! I’m looking forward to them so much,” DuVernay tweeted.

Ava also teased that someone from her acclaimed Netflix series When They See Us will be in New Gods.

“In each of my narrative projects since my first film entitled I WILL FOLLOW, I bring over an actor from the last project I made. So, yes, there is a 99.9% chance this will happen again,” DuVernay tweeted.

Surely comic and movie fans will be on the edge of their seats as more info surfaces. We’ll keep you updated!

Jordyn Woods Talks Tristan Thompson Cheating Scandal For Cosmopolitan UK

Jordyn Woods covers the latest issue of Cosmopolitan UK and talks all about beefing with the Kardashian-Jenner klan. The entrepreneur, model, and reality star says the national cheating scandal really started to affect her.

“Sh*t happens,” Jordyn told Cosmpolitan UK. “And in the end, I never want to see anyone hurt; I would hate to be the reason for anyone’s pain. We all have to go to sleep with ourselves at night.”

She says at one point she became obsessed with people’s reactions to the scandal.

“It becomes addictive to look on the internet, to look at your name,” she said. “When I would look at my name and see all of the things that people were saying, it became like a tumor. It became cancerous to me.”

Jordyn also got really candid about the Tristan Thompson kiss, saying she was “in shock” and didn’t know what to do next.

“I just need[ed] some time by myself to try to understand what [was] happening, why it [was] happening, and how am I going to react to this internally, you know? How can I make things right with myself, with God and with my relationships?”

“That didn’t just happen,” was, reportedly, all she could think.

And even though Kylie unfollowed her on Instagram, Jordyn says she hopes they can get past it all one day.

“I love her. That’s my homie. I hope everything falls into place and that we can all grow and build our relationships with our family and God and come back together one day and be stronger and happier.”

Check out a few of her Cosmopolitan UK photos up top and stay tuned for more from the beauty.

By 2004, Will Smith was at the top of his game. After a slew of hit movies and a celebrated TV show in the ’90s, Will was entering the new millennium with more critical and box office success thanks to movies like Ali, Bad Boys 2 and I, Robot.

However, what some people might not know is that Will was also sharpening his producing skills thanks to his production company Overbrook Entertainment with fellow producer James Lassiter. Along with producing such hits like Ali, I, Robot and Hitch, Overbrook also took on smaller projects, including one that’s become a cult classic in LGBTQ+ cinema.

In 2004 the flick Saving Face was released, and it tells the story of an Asian American lesbian from Queens who falls in love with her boss’ daughter. Meanwhile, her mom moves in with her after being shunned by her grandfather for getting pregnant out of wedlock. The romantic comedy tackles themes of coming out, being honest about who you love and the cultural tensions within the Asian American community.

[embedded content]

While the movie received a lot of critical success, it wasn’t necessarily a box office smash, so it might’ve flew under the radar for some. But over time, it’s gained quite the cult following with many cherishing it as a great addition to LGBTQ+ cinema.

[embedded content]

Who would’ve thought Will Smith would play such an important role in not just queer representation, but Asian American representation. He’s listed as a producer on the flick along with James Lassiter, while Alice Wu is the writer and director of the movie.

With such a fresh voice, you’d think Wu would have a substantial body of work after 2004 but unfortunately, her next writer-director project wouldn’t come until recently. She’s currently helming a feature film called The Half Of It headed for Netflix in the near future. It’s a shame it took this long.

But until her next project is released, you can watch Saving Face on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Vudu, iTunes and Google Play. Surely Alice (and Will Smith) will appreciate it.
