With the plethora of movie and T.V. options on Netflix, it’s only right that we dish on the new releases to help guide your streaming pleasure.

The latest flick to be added to the vault is the film festival darling Atlantics. The movie takes place in Darkar, Senegal and it tells the story of an exploited construction worker named Souleiman (played by Traore) and a young woman named Ada (played by Mame Bineta Sane) who resides under the strict watch of her patriarchal family. Souleiman and Ada share a romantic relationship in secrecy, especially since Ada is betrothed to another man against her wishes. Souleiman and Ada’s relationship reaches an abrupt holt, however, when Souleiman and his fellow workers leave the country by sea in search for better opportunities.

At first, Ada is left devastated but then, a mystery ensues when someone starts a fire in the house of Ada’s new husband. Word gets around that it might’ve been Souleiman, who’s mysteriously returned from the sea. While Ada is trying to figure it out, she’s constantly harassed by a detective who’s trying to get info on Souleiman’s whereabouts. What follows is a movie filled with supernatural occurrences and a woman desperate to reconnect with the love of her life.

The flick was full of wonder, social critique and pure romance. Along with seeking Souleiman, Ada finds the courage to separate herself from her arranged marriage and patriarchal father so she can lead her own life. She has a group of women who give her further insight on her journey, especially her bartender bestie named Dior (played by Nicole Sougou).

It’s the ultimate Black love story.

The movie also made history when its director Mati Diop became the first Black woman to direct a film featured In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. At the festival, the movie was awarded the coveted Grand Prix. It also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, The New York Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival.

If you’re looking for romance, mystery, and supernatural realism, Atlantics should definitely be the next film on your Netflix queue!

Hymen-gate still isn’t over.

After T.I. was rightfully slammed for publicly policing his daughter’s body and sexuality, there are still a select group of people defending his parenting style. One of them is rapper Rah Digga.

T.I.’s controversial comments first made waves in early November when he went on the podcast Ladies Like Us and said that him and his daughter Deyjah would have “yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen.”

“Just check the hymen please and give me back my results expeditiously,” T.I. said, reenacting his comments to the doctor in regards to his daughter. Then, he followed up with, “I will say as of her 18th birthday, her hymen is still intact.”

His comments caused an uproar so big that Tip eventually had to answer to Jada Pinkett-Smith and her mom Adrienne Banfield-Jones on Red Table Talk. He said that he attended his daughter’s gynecologist visits alongside her mother when she was younger and he might have exaggerated parts of the story he told on Ladies Like Us. He still made clear that he likes to assert some level of control over his daughter and he says it would be different if she got pregnant versus if his son got somebody else’s daughter pregnant. His whole point of view continued to be laced with sexism.

But despite this, it seems Tip still has a group of supporters who will back him. Rah Digga took to Twitter this weekend after news broke that New York lawmakers introduced a bill that would ban virginity tests. Digga responded:

So on top of it being criminal for parents to discipline their children they’re trying to make it criminal to monitor their sex lives? FOH!! I STAND WITH @Tip

Rah Digga’s support of T.I. caused a flurry of responses and she was fully prepared to clap back. When someone called Digga’s comments “sick af,” she replied, “What’s sick are the leaps and bounds society is taking to remove parental structuring and people justifying it. Same society won’t have sh** to say when that kid comes home pregnant and abortions are illegal. That’s that on that!!”

You can check out more people calling Rah Digga out and her responses below.

Before SZA and Cardi B gave us albums to help us heal from f***boy and f***girl madness, there was only one Queen who had the personal experience, passion and vocals to tell the story of a 20-something woman (or man) going through relationship issues. That Queen is Mary J. Blige, and 25 years ago, she released her second studio album My Life which took her career, and her fan base, to another level.

These days, it feels as though anything that happened before the Internet existed didn’t actually happen. For example, millennials think the idea of having a friend with benefits is something they created. But Auntie Mary has been talking about her FWB situationship since 1994.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the classic album, hit the flip to check out the lyrics that perfectly describe the many stages of having a friend with bennies.

Meek Mill

Source: @JustInMyView / R1 Digital

Just three years ago, everybody and their mama had something negative to say about Meek Mill. He was dating Nicki Minaj (who was America’s Hip Hop Sweetheart at the time) and sparked an infamous beef with Drake, who also happened to be a beloved jewel to the masses — which made folks want to cancel the Philly bul altogether.

But after being arrested last year and spending 8 months away in prison, people’s hearts grew fonder for Meek and what he brings to the game. With folks like Jay-Z supporting him, it was easy for former haters to jump on the “free Meek” bandwagon.

Now the Dreamchasers CEO is free, with a whole new lease on life — and his 2018 album Championships is a direct reflection of that. Without being too preachy, Meek still manages to spit some truths about the state of his city, the country and surviving as a Black man in this world in general.   There are few songs here and there when he talks about his money, h**s and watches — but not in his usual braggadocios way. This is Meek Mill all grown up.

Hit the flip to check out all the lines on Championships that will have you saying “I felt that.”

Toys R Us Reportedly Sold For $5.7 Billion

Source: Justin Sullivan / Getty

They didn’t want Toys “R” Us to win. But Geoffrey the Giraffe has risen again with a new store opening just in time for Christmas.

According to CNN, after various closings of Toys “R” Us stores across America, the franchise is opening its first new store at a location in Paramus, New Jersey.

And this time, they’re not playing games.

Kids and parents can take a trip to the store at the Westfield Garden State Plaza, and it’ll be complete with an in-store tree house, a reading space and a cinema. The immortal mascot Geoffrey presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning.

This will be the first step with a brand that’s working to revamp itself for the new decade. The toy store’s new parent company, Tru Kids, has been working diligently to reimagine the toy seller’s look and feel. Instead of shelves filled with toys, brands will have the option to “design custom experiences and branded shops to help them create memorable experiences for parents and children,” according to Tru Kids.

This new experience means that less toys will be purchased on the spot and instead, the in-store technology will allow parents to buy from a large stock of toys online. When talking about the Jersey store, Richard Barry, president and CEO of Tru Kids, said, This store has about 1,500 items, but through the technology in the store, you can buy over 15,000 items today.”

Merry Christmas to the kids!

The Proud Family‘s return is becoming more and more of a reality thanks to comments from another one of its stars.

In an epic moment of nostalgic greatness, Strahan, Sara and Keke recently had favorite sitcom parents on their early morning show. William Russ from Boy Meets World was there, Tim Reid from Sister, Sister, and even the notorious but still lovable light-skinned Aunt Viv was there from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Daphne Reid).

One of the biggest moments came when the parents of Family Matters spoke. Reginald Veljohnson and Jo Marie Payton were there in the flesh to represent for Carl and Harriette Winslow. Of course, along with playin Harriette, Payton has also cemented herself in T.V. history as the voice of Suga Momma in the Disney Channel show The Proud Family.

The beloved animation was already rumored to be making a return and now Payton seems to be firming up plans with her statements on Strahan, Sara and Keke. When Keke Palmer asked Payton if she was anything like Suga Mama, she replied, “Yeah, Suga’s large and in charge. That’s all I’ve got to say — except for Suga Mama will be doing some new episodes come February.” Palmer, responded with joy, saying, “Yes, on Disney+. I cannot wait.” You can peep Payton’s words for yourself below.

AFI FEST 2019 Presented By Audi – "Queen & Slim" Premiere – Arrivals

Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN

Queen & Slim is set to hit theaters Thanksgiving weekend and considering it’s a movie about Black Americans fleeing the police after an officer is killed, naturally the topic of the stars’ nationality would come up.

The flick stars British actors Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, who play two fictional Black Americans in Cleveland. Various British actors have taken on roles that were specifically American, including Cynthia Erivo in Harriet and David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 2014’s Selma. It’s even caused some controversy with folks like Samuel L. Jackson questioning whether Black Brits should be taking on so many American roles when the Black American experience is very unique.

Kaluuya and Turner-Smith have an answer to this thanks to an interview with Shadow and Act. Kaluuya explained:

“For me, yeah. It does come into consideration because I don’t want to look disrespectful to a culture. I’m not really in the business of that. If I feel like I’m stepping over a line, I just won’t entertain it. It’s not for me. And then if something comes my way, and I’m given an opportunity, [I] interrogate why people want me to be a part of it, interrogate why I want to do it, and if those reasons align, I’ll step in. And if people project attitudes towards it, I’ve just got to hold it, and go, ‘That’s how you feel.’ But I feel I know why I’m doing this. And I just gotta keep in that space.”

Turner-Smith added:

“I think the objective [is] always to tell the truth…that is always the quest. And in doing Queen & Slim, for me, I wanted to bring honor to this woman’s story and who this woman was and bring honor to the experience of being Black in America. And while I might not be born here, I am a Black person in America and I’ve been in America for a very long time. I felt like this was a conversation I wasn’t afraid to step in, but I was stepping into it with the utmost reverence for the story.”

She continued:

“And I think that as a community, we should all be able to play all of each other in the diaspora. We are having simultaneous experiences all over the world, that are so connected and so the same. My family is Jamaican. We were just the slaves that were dropped off over there. And at the end of the day when you live and exist as a Black person in America, at least to white society, to a certain extent, no one is asking where you’re from and where you were born.”

Turner-Smith finished off by saying:

“And while I do realize there are definitely moments and an ‘othering’ that happens….especially in America where this kind of Black is better or more acceptable than another…that is something that is projected on us by non-Black communities, it is not something that we are projecting onto each other. It is beautiful to be able to do a film like this to bring honor to that community, and I look forward to seeing more Black American actors playing roles where they play British.”

What do you think of Kaluuya and Turner-Smith’s comments? You can check out Queen & Slim when it reaches theaters on November 27.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie - Premiere

Source: L. Cohen / Getty

It’s safe to say Disney owns at least 50 percent of our childhood, especially if you’re a millennial who not only grew up with their animated movies but also with their shows on Disney Channel.

Now that the streaming platform Disney+ has launched, many people are returning to the nostalgia. One of the main go-tos for folks have been Disney Channel shows from the 2000s. While people are enjoying the nostalgia, they’re also noticing some telling moments as adults.

For example, there’s a scene in one Lizzie McGuire episode where Lizzie’s younger brother Matt, who’s white, is chilling with his ride-or-die friend Lanny, who’s Black. After hatching a money-making scheme together, they make a toast with what appears to be Kool-Aid or some sort of punch. The mute Lanny takes a sip of the drink and makes all sorts of sour faces and Matt responds with “Oh sorry Lanny, my bad.” Then, Matt puts a bowl-load of sugar in Lanny’s punch.

Many folks noticed this scene and responded with laughter, but it definitely was a “wait, that’s KINDA racist” moment. One Instagram user joked, “I might just boycott Disney+ for this bs.” Another person tweeted, “Holy sh** lmao, Disney has been wildin’ for years and we never noticed.”

There was also a moment in the show That’s So Raven that probably flew right over people’s heads back in the day. In one episode, Raven is trying to stop her boyfriend Devon from moving with his dad, who’s about to get married. To prevent the move, Raven dresses up as the bride of his dad and confesses to him, “I’m in love with your son.” This causes a gasp from the audience. Then Raven, who still has her face covered by a veil, tells the audience, “No, ya don’t understand, I’m only 15.” This sparks another gasp from the audience and someone can be heard saying, “Who is this? R. Kelly?”

Clearly, back in the 2000s people weren’t completely oblivious to the allegations that R. Kelly abused various underaged girls including an illegal marriage with Aaliyah when she was only 15. Social media peeped the moment in That’s So Raven and shouted out the show. “That’s so Raven really was the superior Disney show,” one user tweeted

Certainly there’s more hidden moments to be discovered in the Disney Channel canon. The question remains…
