The stylish stunner Lori Harvey was selected for VOGUE’s “Beauty Secrets” series this week and she walked viewers through her step by step skincare and makeup routine. Along the way, Harvey revealed she is coming out with a skincare line of her own which she tested on herself, and on boyfriend Michael B. Jordan. She even said her dad Steve Harvey has been using her products and loves them! It turns out that Lori also uses a lot of our go-to’s — like Laura Mercier’s primer and translucent setting powder. We also swear by those Nars concealers she likes and of course the Urban Decay setting spray. We also love that she showed Pat McGrath love. That woman is a legend!

Lori is really known for her glowy skin and natural beauty but as you can see, that’s not as easy as it sounds. She gave such great tips too, are there any you’re planning to try? 2021 continues to give 2020 a run for its money and then some. From Meghan Markle and Prince Harry putting the Royal Family through the wringer to fans witnessing the swift demise of Saweetie and Quavo’s cute coupledom, March turned out to be a rollercoaster month full of moments we truly did not expect. Below are 10 of the most viral events of the last 31 days. Brace yourself.

1. Coming 2 America

After waiting decades, Coming To America fans finally got the sequel they’d been looking forward to. The follow-up saw Eddie Murphy reprise his role as Prince Akeem, as he was crowned King and headed back to Queens, NY to find the illegitimate son he unknowingly fathered in the first movie. Hilarious and timely, the film was full of teachable moments, big belly laughs, and Black Girl Magic. The all-star cast truly did its thing, but of course not everyone thought the second installation lived up to the 1988 classic.

2. Oprah Interviews Meghan Markle & Prince Harry

After teasing her tell-all interview, Oprah Winfrey’s shocking conversation with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry finally aired, leaving the world stunned. With no question off-limits, the royals talked about what led to their decision to take a step back from (not drop) their royal duties and more. Meghan talked about not receiving any help (even when her mental health deteriorated) and family members expressing their concerns over what her child’s skin tone would be, once born. They also revealed their child was to receive no royal title or security, despite ongoing threats and being born into the royal family.

Meghan also set the record straight about a rumor that she made Kate Middleton cry, saying that, in fact, it was Kate who made her cry.

3. Megan Thee Stallion &  Beyoncé’s  2021 Grammys Takeover

After a ton of controversy surrounding the Grammys, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé showed up and showed out. Meg won three Grammys, one of which she shares with Bey for their hit “Savage” remix. And, with four wins that night and 28 total, Bey made history as the most Grammy-awarded singer ever (male or female).

  • Not only did Beyoncé win several times over, her eldest daughter Blue Ivy Carter took home the ‘Best Music Video’ award for “Brown Skin Girl.”
  • There was also a ton of talk (and hate) surrounding Meg and Cardi B’s viral performance of “WAP” … if you missed it, watch them kill the stage here.

4. The Atlanta Spa Shootings

Earlier this month, eight people were killed in three Atlanta massage parlor shootings. Six of those targeted were Asian women, making the attack (reportedly carried out by a 21-year-old white man) an obvious hate crime. Still, authorities debated the alleged shooter’s motives. Meanwhile, celebrities and public figures began speaking out as the news surfaced and #StopAsianHate trended online.

As we previously mentioned, crimes against the Asian American community have increased tremendously (149% in at least 16 big U.S. cities) after Donald Trump dubbed coronavirus the “Chinese Virus” last year. Trump’s words, along with slurs used by his racist followers, continue to incite blame and violent attacks aimed at Asian Americans.

5. Quavo & Saweetie’s Physical Altercation

Fans have been obsessed with Saweetie and Quavo since they first revealed their relationship, but this month their commitment took a turn for the worst. The internet couldn’t stop talking after Saweetie appeared on Respectfully Justin, a Revolt TV YouTube show hosted by social media star Justin LaBoy and Saweetie’s ex Justin Combs. When Combs seemed to be flirting, the rumor mill started and Saweetie set the record straight about any perceived disrespect toward Quavo:

Then Quavo responded.

But Saweetie got the last word… and her final say went viral.

Most recently, Quavo is also facing backlash after video footage of him and Saweetie in the middle of a physical altercation surfaced. The Migos rapper can be seen flinging Saweetie into an elevator and using his weight to push her down, after dodging a punch from her. According to TMZ, the video is from last year. Watch it here.

6. Chloe Bailey

Chloe Bailey’s reign just won’t let up. On top of the fashion and spiciness she’s become adored for on her individual Instagram profile, the beautiful singer has also been getting back to her roots and performing some pretty cool covers. Chloe went viral with her women’s response record to Yung Bleu’s “You’re Mines Still.” She also put her umph on Silk Sonic’s “Leave The Door Open” and Giveon’s “Heartbreak Anniversary.”

7. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

Following the dramatic adventures of Wanda and Vision in Disney Plus series WandaVision, Marvel dropped The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, the hype surrounding the new series was unreal. But, when Marvel introduced fans to a new Captain America following the death of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), all hell broke loose on the internet. Absolutely no one wants Wyatt Russell to fill Evans’ shoes and fans took to Twitter to make that absolutely clear. See reactions here.

9. Derrick Jaxn Caught Lying

Derrick Jaxn’s hypocrisy was definitely one of the most viral moments of March. The “relationship expert” got caught out there in an affair, after his unsuspecting mistress put him on blast. Jaxn supposedly told the young woman he was separated from his wife, which was a whole lie, of course. After denying the rumors, he admitted they were true, sending the internet into a spiral. His wife’s explanations regarding why she stayed by his side also kept everyone talking, as did her depressed appearance in said videos. BOSSIP explains in full here.

10. Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X also threw his hat in the ring this month, after he dropped his “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” video that was full of satanic imagery. In it, Nas X sports his most fashionable strip club attire and gives satan a lap dance. After he revealed a Nike Air Max 97 shoe with a single drop of blood in the air bubble, Nike sued to make it clear the company had no part in his “satan shoes.” Check out the video that ruffled tons of feathers, including Nick Young’s, below.

Cynthia Bailey loves her wigs, and she loves a new collection from a natural hair company that can keep fabulously fashioned units intact, even in the midst of a steamy bachelorette party.

The Real Housewife of Atlanta/model/reality star is the new brand ambassador for SheaMoisture’s Wig & Weave haircare collection alongside her daughter Noelle Robinson.

The mother-daughter team is starring in a campaign showcasing how the wig and weave line of products can be used for the installation, maintenance, and removal of wig and weave hair extensions.

The line that features products enriched with tea tree, borage seed oil, and aloe, is said to be gentle on edges and products include bonding glue & bond release spray, oil sheen spray, scalp soother, and wig & weave flyaway wrap mousse.

BOSSIP recently chatted with Cynthia about the collection, her affinity for switching up her look with wigs, and she gave us the real deal on what Black models have to endure behind the scenes when it comes to their hair.

The stunning star also spilled on which SheaMoisture products she’d recommend to secure edges throughout that steamy #RHOA #strippergate saga.

There are just so many different product lines, what about SheaMoisture’s wig and weave collection really stood out to you?

You know, what I really love about their collection is that it’s wig products but at the same time it’s all-natural. There’s no real alcohol-based stuff. so it doesn’t damage your real hair. And a lot of people don’t realize, you know, putting your wig down, gluing it down is not what messes up your hair. Taking it off is where you get jacked up, so they [SheaMoisture] have this amazing bond-removing glue shampoo and removing spray. It has no alcohol in it, so it doesn’t really affect your real hair underneath.

And that’s so important because I really feel like this pandemic 2020 just changed the game, OK? It really did change the game and it really gave everybody that had struggle edges a chance to grow their edges back. You’re at home you can braid it up, you can keep it oiled as best you can. You actually have time to massage your edges and stimulate that growth back. And I feel like wigs such a great protective option to wear on top of your natural hair and it really works together. SheaMoisture outside of the wig and weave products, they have great products for natural hair. Then they get the wig products, now they are great. And again, I can’t stress enough how much I love the fact that their wig products still are good for the hair as well. It just works together, it really does work together. And they were kind enough to just put everything you really need in one situation.

I feel like your daughter Noelle is lucky that she has you as a mom because you can teach her about protective styles and taking care of your edges. When I was in college, I had like six strands of hair because I didn’t know what I was doing. How long did it take you to really understand the importance of taking care of your hair underneath the wig? A lot of people don’t understand that.

A lot of people still don’t actually know how to take care of their hair underneath and even understand how to properly put wigs on and take wigs off and how to take care of wigs because if you’re going to wear wigs, you have to take them if you want to get any real mileage out of your wigs. For me, it was like the investment part of a good wig. If I’m going to make an investment into a good wig, I’m trying to have that wig for some years. SheaMoisture’s wig and weave product line is great for just helping maintain the life of the wig. There’s levels, I wear mostly closures because then it is easier for me because I’m the kind of girl I want to take it off right when I get done working. As soon as I get done doing a scene for housewives, that wig is coming off on the drive home. A lot of women feel like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t take my wig off around my husband!’ Mike [Hill] helps me [take it off] He loves me one hundred percent natural. I don’t want to fight with a wig all day long, it’s like taking off your bra. It feels good, like taking off a mask.

One thing that I’ve noticed is like wigs are just so much more acceptable these days. When did you personally see the narrative change around wigs?

I remember when my girlfriends wouldn’t even want to own up that they had a weave, they didn’t even wanna talk about them three or four little tracks.  It was just like this whole stigma attached to it. You really didn’t want to own up to a wig. For me, when I came on housewives, I didn’t wear a ton of wigs as a model a lot things were natural but when I did do style, we did pop a wig on and take it off. So I learned very early in the game that wigs are my friend. If I’m trying o do like a burgundy color, I’m not trying to dye my real hair. That’s a wig, honey!  If I want a bob one day, I want my hair to my butt the next day; that is a wig! Ain’t nobody got time to sit and get a weave done.

And one of the things that I single-handedly did on housewives when I came on, I had to make sure the network knew very, very early in the game is; I change my looks. I remember having a conversation with them when I first came on the show. They were like really shook they were like, ‘Wait, like your hair keeps changing, I think it’s gonna confuse the audience!’ And I was like, ‘No, the audience needs to know that I changed my hair.’

When I first came on, I had my short-cropped hair, and I when would get bored with that, because you can only get so many looks with that I liked to pop a wig on. Once I started doing that, they like totally embraced it. My fans love it. And now like I’m like, you know, I’m known for changing my hair on the show people don’t expect me to keep the same hairstyles like they always want, you know, they’re excited to see what I’m gonna do. Like I was the first one on the show to wear a big afro, Andy [Cohen] lost his mind with that. That was a big deal. That’s a wig, girl, a wig from the beauty supply. That afro wig is probably $49.99 and t looks like a Jheri curl wig. But I was like, I figured it out. I bought it and I was like, Okay, I can invest in this and take it home. And I just started combing out the curls, and it turned into this big afro. It’s a whole different situation now. I love that women are able to be more transparent about the level of beauty that they want to do. Find what works for you and then get the products. And you know, I obviously recommend the Shea Moisture wig line to help you be able to do it effectively. To be able to take care of your wigs, to keep them clean, to be able to not only put them on properly with the right products but more importantly, to take them off because taking your wig off is way more important for keeping your edges intact.

Speaking of customizing your hair, I noticed that a lot of black women in Hollywood have talked about being on set and dealing with people who didn’t know how to style black hair so they did it themselves. Have you ever had any of those experiences on a set?

Oh, absolutely, absolutely! Which is why, again, I feel like I kind of had an advantage over the other ladies when I came on the show, I’ve been dealing with glam since I was 18-years-old as a model. So I knew how to do my own makeup, you know, the girls, I came up with Tyra [Banks], all those girls, they know how to do their own makeup because we would get there and they wouldn’t necessarily have the right foundation shade so we always took a makeup bag with us and kind of touched up our makeup. And the same with hair. To be honest, the fashion industry is a predominantly white industry. Only a few of us that are in that industry that actually have success in that industry, especially, you know, I go back a little bit. So when I was coming up, it was even less of us. It’s evolved a lot since then. So now, you know you get there. They don’t know anything about like, how to deal with afro wigs. So I had to learn myself. You know, I had to be prepared to really work with them, work together with them to kind of achieve the looks that I wanted to achieve. So that meant I bring a hair bag, they don’t have no edge gel. Ain’t no white hairstylist got no edge gel to lay your edges down, or even know how to straighten out our kitchen in the back. I’m like; ‘But my kitchen nappy!’ They didn’t know what a kitchen was. I’ve been in the game a long time, just in terms of knowing how to do my own glam. And it’s been such an advantage to being on the show.

Speaking of the show, I’m gonna give you a scenario. I’m in Charleston, I’m at 50 Cynt’s bachelorette party and I’m nervous, it’s getting hot and heavy because Bolo “and his thaang” are there and I start sweating out my edges. What Shea Moisture products do you recommend to save my edges?

I don’t know if any hair care product is gonna be able to help you at my bachelorette party. When Bolo pulled that thang out, everybody’s edges went out, everybody’s wigs lifted. But seriously even when you are in a heated situation like my bachelorette party, if you lay your wig down, with SheaMoisture’s Wig & Weave line hair glue, you’re gonna be good, because it really does stay in place. And the only way you will be able to take it off effectively is if use the bond remover spray and the shampoo. So even in a heated situation like that honey, your wig is good, child. You watched the episode and it was a hot and heavy episode but those lace fronts and wigs were still on our heads.

Have y’all been watching “Sistas”?

Crystal Renee' Hayslett

Source: Kayla Madonna / Kayla Madonna

BOSSIP Sr. Content Director Janeé Bolden recently caught up Crystal Renee’ Hayslett, who plays Fatima on Tyler Perry’s Sistas on BET.

The series follows a group of single black females as they navigate their “complicated love lives,” careers and friendships through the ups-and-downs of living in a modern world of social media and unrealistic relationship goals. Hayslett was recently announced as a series regular on season two. She plays the character Fatima, a paralegal at a prestigious law firm, who has a confident approach to dating and likes to keep her communication clear and her options open. Fatima has been a tremendous asset to Andi Barnes (played by KJ Smith) at work, which leads them to forge a real friendship, but if you’ve been watching this season you know that Fatima has been forging ties with a new love interest who she’s actually connected to in ways she has yet to discover! In addition to acting on “Sistas,” Crystal is also a consulting producer on the show.

BOSSIP: How much input did you have into creating your character Fatima?

Crystal Renee’: Fatima is loosely based around Crystal as far as her demeanor and her attitude, but a lot of the stories that I share with Tyler go to all of the different characters.

BOSSIP: How difficult is it to balance working as a Consulting Producer and acting at the same time?

Crystal Renee’: I consult with Tyler as far as things going on and what things we’re dealing with dating in Atlanta. The first season I was costume designing, I was consulting producing and acting and it was insane, so the second season I was like we need to find someone else to do the costume design because it was just too much. Season 2, both acting and consulting was a lot easier because most of my work is done on the front end so by the time we get to camera I can just focus on acting.

BOSSIP: Have you always wanted to act?

Crystal Renee’: Since I was a kid acting has been a passion of mine. I used to give speeches on my parents fireplace mantle, like acceptance speeches for an awards show, since I was around five-years-old.

BOSSIP: Similar to Fatima, your faith is important to you. Can you talk about how your spirituality has helped you manifest your acting goals?

Crystal Renee’: My journey wasn’t the original journey that a lot of people go through when they pursue acting. My faith played a big part because there came a point in time where I had to put my faith in God and allow him to order my steps. Even when things weren’t going the way I thought they should . Especially around the times when I started getting callbacks from auditions all of a sudden Tyler asked me to be his stylist and a costume designer so I was at a crossroads like, ‘Do I take this job or do I continue to chase this dream” and as you’re getting older you also want stability so I was like ‘alright Lord I’m just going to trust you on this and take this job.’ And everything ended up working out and I couldn’t imagine it to work out any better, for it to be on a show that I actually helped create, that I’m actually producing on. I was there from the very beginning of the show. It’s actually super dope to see how things unfolded.

BOSSIP: What are some of the comments you get from your friends about the show?

Crystal Renee’: They love it. My friends and family will be like, ‘That was Crystal right there. Certain things that they know me.’ The past couple episodes with the shower scene I had people hitting me who I hadn’t talked to in years talking about, ‘Oh so this is what we’re doing?’ One of my exes hit me like, ‘Oh you showing out now,’ and I’m like ‘I’m just doing my job.’ My dad kept asking my mom, ‘Is it over? Is it over? Is it over?’

BOSSIP: What’s it like working with Devale Ellis, who plays your love interest Zack?

Crystal Renee’: I could not be luckier to have such an amazing scene partner. Devale he’s patient, he’s a teacher, I learn so much from him and he takes the time to help me develop my character and my skillset. Because we shoot really fast, sometimes he can see me getting overwhelmed and he’ll be like, ‘Hey take a beat, you got this.’ And it’s vice versa too, like one day he came to me like, ‘Crystal I need you to carry this,’ because he had a super long day and his brain was just fried, and I was like, ‘I got you!’ So we lean on each other. We’re really good friends, I’m friends with his entire family, his wife. So it just makes on camera that much easier. I trust him. I super love D. We call him the Dad of the cast, because he’s like, ‘Alright guys, we gotta do this today.’ He treats us like we’re his kids.

BOSSIP: We saw his wife (Khadeen Ellis) your comments saying she almost jumped in the shower with you guys for the sex scene.

Crystal Renee’: Yesssss. I love K. She is so funny but she was so serious. One thing I love about his wife is she is so confident in their marriage, because you just never know when you have scenes like that with someone who is married. It was something I was apprehensive about. It was the first sex scene I ever had, I was super nervous and on top of that this man is married and I wanted to be conscious that there is a wife at home watching this. When I met her there was an instant bond. It was funny because he had called, it was right before we had to shoot that scene and he told her, ‘Crystal is super nervous because we have to go shoot this shower scene.’ K was like, ‘Girl you better go do your thing.’I think when she said that it really helped me like, ‘You got this’. It was one less thing I have to worry about. She really helped me.

BOSSIP: This show is a little wild, some of the storylines are doing the most, do you ever say this is a little extreme?

Crystal Renee’: It’s go hard or go home and let Tyler Perry do his thing. Once I give my input on dating and those type of things it’s Tyler Perry’s show after that, so whatever he writes, that’s what we film. He’s known for the cliffhangers. It’s funny because when we’re reading the scripts we’re like, what’s about to happen next? We’re just in suspense like everybody else.

BOSSIP: We’re waiting for everyone to figure out that Zack’s new girl is Andi’s co-worker. How small is the world?

Crystal Renee’: What’s funny is the character Fatima has no idea that Zack is Karen’s ex. You know Zack and Fatima have only been out to dinner one time. Everything else has been at the house and the one time we did go out nobody saw us. And he never says Karen’s name. It’s just an ex and every time he says something, Fatima is like, ‘I don’t want to hear about her.’

Crystal Renee' Hayslett

Source: Kayla Madonna / Kayla Madonna

BOSSIP: Is there a lesson in that? Do women need to do less at home dates? Or at least know the ex’s name so they know they’re not going to get their hair done by her?

Crystal Renee’: Absolutely. Communication is key. I think it’s important. There’s 50/50. Sometimes your past is your past, I don’t care but also I just want to make sure I don’t know that person because if it’s somebody that I’m really cool with then that’s a no go.

BOSSIP: That’s a real Atlanta thing too — Atlanta is so small the dating circles are like if you didn’t date that person one of your friends may have or you may have dated one of his friends, it’s one of those things that is really precarious in certain cities.

Crystal Renee’: Yeah and that’s something I definitely touched bases with Tyler on. This city is so small. It really is. It’s like a dating pool. And you don’t know who’s dated who. I’m happy we got to touch on that because it’s so true.

BOSSIP: What’s next for you? We love the content you create outside of TV, all the video tutorials you post on social media.

Crystal Renee’: I’m auditioning, trying to book more stuff. I’m really excited about the platform this has given me and the opportunities that wait in the future.

As far as the video tutorials, I’m super creative and it’s something I love to do. And I love editing. It’s something about creating the content and editing it and putting it out there and getting that feedback from certain people who tried recipes or took interior decorating ideas that I had, my hair videos they love those. It’s something I have a lot of fun doing and something I definitely want to take to another level with my brand, whether that’s something like having my own hair products or my own interiors line. It’s something I definitely want to think about.

Tune in to “Sistas” Wednesday nights at 9pm on BET

The actress made waves when she chopped off all her hair for Netflix’s 2017 film “Nappily Ever After” while portraying an uptight ad exec who conformed to white standards of beauty before shaving her head bald in a moment of frustration and despair.

Since the film’s release, Sanaa’s shown her hair’s progression that’s included her hair pressed out seemingly with a straightening comb and a TWA (teeny weeny afro).

Now, however, she’s giving fans an update on her hair’s progression and it’s glorious.

This was Sanaa’s hair in 2018, one year after her big chop for the movie role…

and this is Sanaa’s mane now in 2020 after wearing protective styles, braids, and limited heat.

A happily big chopped Sanaa previously said that she wanted “Nappily Ever After” to be a “love letter to all the little Black girls out there.”

“We have been told and taught from the time we were little girls, that being brown isn’t the prettiest. That kinky hair or textured hair isn’t attractive, but I want you to know that is a LIE,” said Sanaa. “Beauty comes in every shape, size, color, and hair texture. Start finding the beauty within yourself and start talking to yourself with love.”

She joins the ranks of Tyra Banks, Nicki Minaj, and more who’ve flaunted their real long, real hair that stays healthy under protective styles like wigs and weaves.

What do YOU think about Sanaa’s luscious locks?

Another day, another Zendaya slay.

Zendaya for ESSENCE

Source: AB+DM / Essence Magazine

Certified It Girl Zendaya is paying homage to It Girls of the past on four equally sizzling ESSENCE magazine covers. At just 24 years old, the actress is being celebrated for leading two successful series on two of the biggest networks in TV land; costarring in a huge blockbuster Marvel film; and becoming the youngest woman ever to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama, HBO’s Euphoria.

For ESSENCE’s November + December issue, Zendaya’s picturesque black and white photos were taken by powerhouse photographers Ahmad Barber and Donté Maurice of AB+DM. The pics are a direct tribute to icons of the past and in particular, the actress is channeling Donyale Luna, the first Black supermodel and the first Black model to appear on the cover of Vogue.

Inside the publication, Zendaya dishes to writer Sylvia Obell on her historic Emmy win, speaking truth to power and carrying our legacy forward.

Read excerpts from her “A Work Of Art” cover story below.

ON WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH HER MIND RIGHT BEFORE HER HISTORIC EMMY WINNING:

“There’s a video of me that a family friend took while I was waiting, and you can see my leg shaking. In my head I was like, ‘Dude, just chill out. What will be, will be.’ I remember taking a deep breath, and then hearing my name, and then my family screamed. I was worried that if they kept screaming for too long, I wouldn’t have any time to actually say anything—but I didn’t want to stop them, because they were having a great time. It was a very special night. I’ll definitely remember that one forever…”

ON RECEIVING SUPPORT FROM OTHER BLACK WOMEN AFTER HER EMMY WIN:

“I’m honored to have that support, especially from my fellow young Black creatives. Through this Emmy’s period, especially, I felt a strong sense of support within our community, which I’m really grateful for. I think what’s slowly starting to happen is, artists like Issa Rae and Lena Waithe have created opportunities that have resulted in more of us being in these rooms. That’s such a special feeling, and I think it’s definitely changing the idea that there can only be “one at a time,” which is false. I love to see that genuine love and respect for each other’s work. I hope that we continue to expand that in all kinds of beautiful ways, because I think we’re on a really good path…”

ON LAW ROACH’S CREATIVE + FASHION DIRECTION:

“I also felt very excited that ESSENCE allowed Law [Roach] and me to be a part of the creative team and do something a little bit different. I had so much fun on this shoot paying homage to Donyale Luna, the first Black supermodel. A lot of what I do, specifically within fashion, is a tribute to fashion icons who came before me—many of whom are Black women. I love the way it turned out. I’m very proud of it. It’s one of my favorite cover shoots I’ve ever done.”

ON FILMING “MALCOLM & MARIE” WHEN THE PANDEMIC FIRST SHUT DOWN:

“It was a dream, because I’ve always wanted to be able to just strip everything away. I love what I do—and like most people, I was finding ways to stay inspired and stay creative, and luckily I know people who are the same way. It was great sitting in a room with John David Washington, Marcell Rév and Sam [Levinson], literally writing scenes as we went, coming up with ideas as we moved through the characters, and finding new things every day. That was the coolest part. That is why I do this.”

HER NEW YEAR’S WISH FOR BLACK WOMEN:

“For us to continue to fully realize our power and harness it to do great things, because we are incredibly powerful. We’re often convinced that we’re not, and taught to shrink—but we have to believe in our collective power. I always think of that Beyoncé song, ‘They’ll never take my power, my power, my power.’ Let’s take that energy into the new year…”

ESSENCE’s November + December issue also includes a special Election 2020 package featuring a History Maker profile on Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris and her historic run for the White House. In the piece, News & Politics editor Tanya Christian details her year-plus coverage of the Senator—including her live appearance at the 2019 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans during her presidential run. The issue also features The Black Women Behind the Biden-Harris Campaign, an article showcasing key movers and shakers who helped drive the campaign to victory.

This is Marsai Martin‘s world and we’re just happy to live in it!

The child superstar, who made her mark on history as the youngest executive producer ever, covers Essence for the publication’s first-ever Girls United digital cover. Inside, Martin talks diversity in Hollywood, living authentically as a young Black woman and creative, and rewriting the rules. “The talented @marsaimartin is positive proof that the teens of today are an inspiration to those humble and wise enough to note their influence. Proudly leading the pack, the young mogul has clearly figured out how to live large while living life on her own terms,” Essence said of the young black-ish icon.

Here are a few highlights from her cover story:

On Living Authentically: “I’m always myself…I’m in the space I’m in right now because I was just always unapologetically myself…”

On Inclusion In Hollywood: “It really sucks to say, but people are just now starting to understand that we as Black people have very creative minds and we won’t stop until we get there…”

On Pitching Her Film: “I really didn’t think of it as a nerve-wracking thing. Math equations scare me a lot more than public speaking…”

It’s unclear how she fits in, but it sounds like she’ll be a Tanya Sam, Marlo Hampton-style “friend of the cast.”

Bershan is a business coach, motivational speaker, and has her own podcast called “Buckle Up With Bershan.” So far it looks like the official housewives will consist of Eboni K. Williams, Ramona Singer, Sonja Morgan, Countess Luann de Lesseps, and Leah McSweeney.

Bershan is reportedly good friends with Leah.

MadameNoire reports that Bershan, who also starred on OWN”s “Love In The City”, is a TWO TIME breast cancer survivor. Bershan told MN that after she was diagnosed for a second time, this time with stage four, she was only weeks away from getting married.

“You know you think, you’re about to get married in two weeks, you don’t want to hear you have stage four breast cancer,” said Bershan. “You should be thinking about what color veil or what kind of shoes you should get. Walking into the room, just saying ‘Look, honey I love you. I love you with all my heart and I’m a fighter, I’m a warrior, I’m a survivor but I’ve got this diagnosis and the doctor told me ‘do I believe in miracles?’ It’s not a good thing but I’m going to beat this. I don’t care what I do, I’m going to beat it. And you know what my husband said to me? ‘You are going to be my wife. I love you and we’re going to beat this together.”

She indeed did beat it, and she and her husband are reportedly still together. She also credited her plant-based diet with saving her life. “I don’t like meat at all. It’s changed my life.”

She also recently celebrated being 12 years cancer-free.

Congratulations to her!
