91st Annual Academy Awards - Press Room

It’s that time of year again when the post-Oscar buzz either has you on a big high, or it has you highly pissed off. Sadly, when it comes to representation for Black people, the latter usually happens more than the former.

At this year’s Oscars, however, there were some notable wins for Black people. Black Panther swept some important technical awards with Ruth E. Carter winning for Best Costume Design and Hannah Beachler winning for Best Production Design, making them the first Black women to win in either category.

Regina King also won Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk while Mahershala Ali snagged the gold statue for his supporting role in Green Book.

Add a Best Adapted Screenplay win for Spike Lee, and Black people are winning, right?!

Meh.

When time came around for the Best Picture announcement, many people were surprised or just plain outraged when Green Book took home the gold. A lot of folks took their pain out on Twitter in the most hilarious way.

But before we get to that, if you haven’t seen or heard of Green Book, the movie based on real characters has developed quite a notorious reputation.

Although Mahershala’s performance in the movie was praised, the flick centers around Bronx-bred racist Tony Lip (played by Viggo Mortensen), who serves as the tour driver for acclaimed musician Dr. Don Shirley (played by Ali).

The movie explores race relations on a very shallow level, with Lip being portrayed as a White savior who defends Shirley from Southern White racists and introduces him to things like fried chicken and Little Richard…as if Shirley, a Black musician, couldn’t have possibly had fried chicken or heard of Little Richard.

Regardless if certain scenes were true or not, the movie painted Lip as a regular working-class White man who just happened to have some prejudices. More importantly, we should sympathize with him because he’s supposedly less racist than the Southern racist caricatures that we’re all-too familiar with in movies.

Many people slammed this one-note approach to race relations with shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers and Desus & Mero making parodies of the movie.

The family members of the real-life Dr. Shirley also dragged the film with Shirley’s younger brother Maurice Shirley labeling the movie a “symphony of lies,” according to Shadow and Act.

The title of the movie wasn’t even appropriate. The real-life Green Book, “The Negro Motorist Green Book” published by postal worker Victor Hugo Green in 1938, listed priceless info of safe eating establishments and lodging for Black people in the Jim Crow South. The Green Book movie barely covered this important info aside from a scene when Lip was handed a copy of the Green Book by a recording label executive.

All of these issues made Green Book‘s Best Picture win feel like another smack in the face to Black stories. When competing with Black-led films like Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman, the white-washed, White savior narrative won again.

Even creatives like Spike Lee couldn’t contain their frustration, considering the BlacKkKlansman director reportedly stormed out his seat when Green Book was announced as Best Picture.

Of course, many frustrations were let out on Twitter with White and Black users alike clowning the movie’s shallow take on race.

Because the Internet has no chill, many people also hilariously made fun of Green Book by comparing it to that one White person who tries waaay too hard to prove they’re not racist.

Hit the next pages for more spot-on tweets of how Green Book strikingly resembles your allegedly “non-racist” White friend.

Just because Black History month is almost over, doesn’t mean that we’ll stop celebrating all things Black and beautiful. With all the madness going on in the world, it’s important to highlight things that are positive and inspirational. As @destroyshelbey pointed out:

“I WANNA KEEP IT UP LONGER THAN JUST FEBRUARY. CELEBRATE BLACK HEROS ALLLLLL YEAR”

We feel you, sis. Speaking of heros, we do a great job as a culture honoring superheros and celebrities. But what about the everyday man or woman who go above and beyond to make the world a better place with little to no credit whatsoever?

“We need to stop idolizing celebrities like super heroes. No, no they’re not. Ppl like doctors, teachers, fire fighters..are our real heroes.”- @MichelleBorth

Take James Shaw Jr. for example. The 29-year old is sort of like the real life Black Panther now. Back in April 2018, we watched him save several lives by disarming a man who opened fire at a Waffle House in Tennessee.

“I’m not a hero. I’m just a regular person. I think anybody could’ve did what I did if they’re just pushed in that kind of cage. And you have to either react or you’re going to, you know, fold.” – James Shaw Jr.

Instead of arresting Black folks for chilling at a Starbucks, it’s time to start acknowledging the real life heroes who risk their lives for the well being of others — even when others aren’t too fond of their melanin.

Hit the flip for more real life heroes we should be celebrating all day, erryday.

It seems like every time Tyga wins, he manages to take an L shortly after. On Saturday, the “Taste” rapper got into an argument with someone at Floyd Mayweather‘s 42nd birthday and wound up getting dragged out club by security. But the real “wtf” moment was when Tyga got outside of the Hollywood hotspot, he reached in his security’s pocket to grab for his gun.

Luckily, the guard was much more cool headed and aware than Tyga was, and managed to keep his pistol. No word on what went down to cause T to want to grab the draco, but he and his crew fled the scene shortly after being escorted out the club.

LOL.

Lamar Odom Speaks Out About Khloe Kardashian Cheating Scandal

It was only a matter of time before Lamar Odom spoke out about his ex-wife Khloe Kardashian‘s highly publicized cheating scandal. A source close to the former NBA player told Us Weekly,

“Lamar has always cared about Khloé, he still has love for her and he hates that she’s been hurt again. He has a lot of regret over how he acted in their marriage. And he feels awful that she is going through more pain. He wants to reach out to her and give her his love and support.”

Lamar pretty much had the same sentiments when Tristan Thompson was caught cheating on Khloe the first time, back in April 2018, but he never reached out to her.  He even boasted about his ex-wife’s parenting skills when she gave birth to her and Thompson’s daughter, True, last year.

Something tells us that Lam will definitely be checking up on Khloe this time.

R. Kelly Surrenders To Chicago Police

It’s been a long time coming, but cruddy crooner R. Kelly has finally surrendered. On Friday, the controversial singer turned himself in to Chicago Police after being indicted on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, tweeted early Friday that the 52-year old would turn himself into police between 11 p.m ET — and by 8:15 pm ET, he was at the Chicago precinct in handcuffs. According to reports, if Kelly is taken into police custody, he’s expected to be held overnight and appear Saturday in bond court.

As we previously reported, the Grammy winner has been charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse in Cook County, Illinois after four women accused him of sexually abusing them between September 1998 and January 2010. Three of the four victims were between the ages 13 and 17 when the alleged abuse occurred.

It seems like he’s ready — for a jail cell.

Tamar Braxton Lolo Jones Celebrity Big Brother

Tamar Braxton Vs. Lolo Jones

This Celebrity Big Brother beef just won’t let up! Tamar Braxton and Lolo Jones are at each other’s necks again on social media, and clearly they both want smoke. Lolo shared a video of herself on Instagram prepping for the Summer Olympics, and shaded the hell out of former CBB alliance member Ricky Williams, who evicted her from the house.

She wrote,

“Praying I get thru practice … also Lord if you could give me a new pair of lungs bc I can’t breathe and my asthma pump is 50m away. Oh Wait Lord one more thing Also could you help me forgive Ricky Williams?…But like not right now but like maybe in 10 years I will be ready.”

Tamar didn’t find the caption to be funny at all. She commented under the olympian’s post:

“Yeah forgive @williams because at this point you are doing the MOST!! It was a game Lolo and to be honest we all bullsh***d each other. Getoverit.com #stillloveya”

The CBB winner may still love Lolo, but judging by the runner’s clapback, she doesn’t feel the same about Tay Tay. Lolo clapped back telling Tamar that she was just joking with the caption, but:

Use the $240K and buy some more wigs. Can’t wait to see ya.

We all know that Tamar isn’t letting anyone get the last word. She wrote back, “I will buy me a wig right after you buy you a husband.” Do you think these a just jokes? Or is it on site for Tamar and Lolo?

It’s been four years since August Alsina gave an official interview, and so much has gone on in the star’s life since then.  The Shade Room caught up with the “I Luv This” singer and he dished on everything fans have been wanting to know during his hiatus, including the status of his relationship with Jada Pinkett-Smith and how he’s been holding up since his sister’s death.

Aug got emotional when asked how he’s been feeling:

“I’m going through my process. I’m going through my journey. And I’m not looking for any sympathy because I know that God has me even when I feel that God doesn’t. Even when I’m talking to God in a rage and I can’t hear God responding to me. I’m just in a space where I know that there are certain things you can learn about God through suffering.”

The tears continued to fall as he opened up about getting custody of his nieces after his sister’s death.

“While I’m suffering, and while I’m watching my nieces suffer — who are my kids now— to hear them tell me ‘I want my mother and I want my father’. And them seeing me as a person who can always fix something for them. And this is a situation that I can’t fix. I just continue to walk by faith and not what I see. Because people are dying.”

Fortunately, it looks like August is back in good spirits since the emotional interview.

We’re rooting you, August! Prayers up for the young king.

Remember when Michael Jordan was just a soft spoken college student trying to navigate his newfound fame? It’s hard to remember a time when he wasn’t already established as the greatest athlete ever.

[embedded content]

But just like all the athletes we’ve seem come up in the game, MJ wasn’t always the star we know and love today. Literally, ask anyone you know “who’s the greatest Basketball player ever” and even folks who aren’t into the game will most likely say Michael Jordan.

Just ask folks on Reddit who live for great debates like these. One Jordan stan wrote,

“It was almost like he was superhuman. He excelled in every skill of the game. He may have been the best offensive player and the best defensive player at his position of shooting guard.

Of his time, Bird, Magic, Kareem and Olajuwon were great, but they could not dominate the game and league like Jordan could and did.”

Another Reddit user added:

“Jordan has it all. He is the most accomplished athlete on the planet and by far one of the most famous one too amongst the audience outside America. Nobody holds a perfect record like he does in his respective sport. He has accomplished everything NBA has to offer.

The thing that makes Michael even more charismatic is the brand he created that everybody seems to love, the “Air Jordan” sneaker series.”

Speaking of Air Jordan, some would say MJ’s success with his Jordan Brand is one thing that most athletes before and after him weren’t able to accomplish. Jordan sneakers have become a cultural phenomenon, especially in the Black community. Think about it — Nike re-releases old designs and models of their shoes under the Air Jordan brand, and they still sell like hot cakes.

Twitter user @Styledbykmilan joked, “Michael Jordan: I don’t have to design any new shoes. I’ll just rerelease the old ones and call them “retro”. She has a point, and the brilliant marketing plot has made MJ a very rich man.  As of 2019, sources say his net worth is estimated at around 1.9 billion dollars.

In honor of the G.O.A.T.s birthday, let’s dig into the archives and take a look back at a different time— when Reagan was President, movie tickets cost $2.50 and Michael Jordan was a young college student unsure of his future in the NBA. Moral of the story, everyone has potential to be the greatest.

In the words of NIKE, just do it.
