Kash Doll’s Real Age

Kash Doll celebrated her birthday on Thursday, March 14th, and of course, the running jokes regarding her age took over her comments section.

The Detroit rapper claims she’s 27 years old, but folks dug in the crates and found old tweets of hers that beg to differ. In the 2013 post, Kash wrote that she was 24 years old — which would mean yesterday would have been her 30th birthday.

So inquiring minds want to know, what’s your real age, sis?

Thoughts?

T.I. Birthday Party

Source: Thaddaeus McAdams / Getty

It seems a rapper’s career isn’t complete until they’ve compared themselves to 2Pac.

T.I. was the latest artist to align himself with the deceased rapper. On Wednesday, Tip posted a collage of pictures of himself on Instagram and captioned the post:

“Any way you slice it… I’m the very best at what I do… impossible to duplicate… accept no substitution!!! When you get done buuuulshittin’… Riddle me this…. Who since 2Pac has maintained as much consistent diversity within music genres, businesses & other opportunities?

I’ll wait…”

I don’t think Tip got the response he wanted.

Folks went in on his comment section, giving countless examples of diverse and business-savvy rappers besides him.

“What about Common, Eminem, and didn’t LL Cool J do it first,” djangelick commented.

“You are a great artist but you ain’t no 2pac! Stay humble or get humbled,” one alex_0406 wrote.

When many users started mentioning Jay-Z‘s diversity within music and business, T.I. responded, “Respectfully to da goat…what major feature film he [starred] in?”

Folks had a clapback for that as well, with one garon67 writing:

“c’mon TIP you was never the leading star in no major film….. sidekick at best ! 2 Pac was leading star in [h]is movies….. Business move and Music carrer #JayZ all day ! You definitely a legend in the game tho #facts”

The ironic thing about rappers comparing themselves to 2Pac is that they end up oversimplifying Pac in the process…

Or the comparison just ends up being wildly inaccurate.

For example, T.I. said he was the most consistently diverse rapper within music genres and businesses since Pac.

But in reality, Pac barely had any business ventures, at least in comparison to people like Jay-Z, 50 Cent or even Eminem. Although Pac developed a substantial acting career for himself, he wasn’t producing films, T.V., or buying up sports teams.

2Pac also barely appeared on tracks with pop artists, making T.I.’s “diversity within music” claim faulty as well. While Tip might can claim this title with signature songs with Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke, Pac barely linked up with pop stars…unless you’re counting his relationship with Madonna. If anything, Pac was pop and didn’t need to do a lot of features to reach a wider audience.

So yea…

These 2Pac comparison are usually small at best and no bueno at worst.

Tip definitely isn’t the first to make such comments though. Hit the next pages to peep other artists who’ve compared themselves to Pac.

For the sake of time, I’ve kept out artists who’ve compared themselves to him in songs.

We’d be here all day.

With less than two weeks until its premiere date, the horror flick Us is already making a name for itself in the movie world.

The Jordan Peele-directed flick already screened at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas on Friday, and critics are showering it with praise.

“It’s official: Jordan Peele is the new Spielberg. is going to be one of the biggest movies of the year,” said author Ramin Setoodeh.

The film’s two leads Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong’o also received a lot of accolades with Lupita already getting Oscar talk.

“It’s safe to say that #UsMovie further proves that @Lupita_Nyongo is one of the finest actresses of her generation,” wrote film industry professional Matt Dentler.

“My review for . Lupita is about to win another Oscar but this time as lead actress. She should actually win 2,” tweeted director Matthew A. Cherry.

Did we mention Lupita completely slayed on the SXSW red carpet as well…

It should be noted that Lupita and Winston aren’t new to having success in the arts together.

Before Winston gain international attention in Black Panther last year and before Lupita broke hearts in her Oscar-winning performance for 12 Years A Slave, the two attended Yale School of Drama together for the master’s program.

Winston even talked about how they once dreamed of being in a superhero flick, and their vision came true when they booked Black Panther together, which was Winston’s first movie.

But even before Yale, Lupita was doing big things, and Winston was definitely getting warmed up for stardom before Black Panther arrived.

Rapsody

Source: @photosbynae / iOne Digital

As one of North Carolina’s top-tier M.C.’s, Rapsody has created a comfortable space for herself in the rap game.

With her lauded album Laila’s Wisdom under her belt, along with celebrated mixtapes and memorable features with folks like Kendrick Lamar, Rapsody is now looking to take on other endeavors.

This definitely doesn’t mean she’s quitting the rap game. Instead, she hopes to exercise more aspects of her creative side. Rapsody stopped by Global Grind on International Women’s Day to discuss some of these burgeoning interests:

“I have so many other loves,” Rapsody said. “Like I was a big reader as a kid. I went to the library all the time, so for that, I want to write children’s books.”

Rapsody also has the dramatic arts on her mind:

“I’d love to get into acting, but I want to do it right. You know I’ve been sent several scripts, but I told my agent to hold off because I really want to take classes and really learn about the art of acting. Like I would want somebody trying to enter the hip hop world to be respectful of the culture and learn the art of M.C.ing, I want to learn how to be a great actor.”

The 36-year-old listed Cicely Tyson and Phylicia Rashad as her biggest influences:

“If I can have the chance to share a screen with them. Even if I was the person who came in and put the milk on the table. Just to be in that space and just to have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and wisdom because they’ve been in the arts forever.”

Inspirational Black women have been a common theme in Rapsody’s career. Although she’s listed people like Jay-Z as a major influence on her rhyming, women like Ms. Lauryn Hill set a standard right when Rapsody needed it.

Since Hill’s seminal work The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, she hasn’t acquired the best reputation when it comes to showing up on time for shows or even creating a good relationship with certain band mates (according to Robert Glasper).

However, Rapsody says there’s always more to an artist than what’s put into the public:

“Lauryn runs her business the way Lauryn wants to run her business,” Rapsody said, “It’s two sides to every story. Robert told his, Lauryn told hers. It’s none of my business. It’s not my place to critique as far as her shows or her lateness.”

Rapsody also doesn’t let the tough talk diminish Ms. Hill’s impact on her life:

“You know, for me, I always say Lauryn was on time when we needed her. When I needed Lauryn in ’98 and ’96, she was on time, so to me, she’s allowed to be late. I think the industry has been trying to run her for her life, so for her to take control of what she wants to do and do it her way, I applaud her on that.”

Rapsody went on to detail the various reasons Hill could be late to a show:

“You know as a mother, putting your children first, I’m never mad at that. You gotta be late because you got something to do with your kids, then do that. You know at this point, if you know she’s going to be late and you ain’t with it, then don’t buy the ticket. If you decide to go, take some Uno cards just in case. I’m just in the business of appreciating Lauryn while she’s here.”

Just like Ms. Hill set a blueprint for many women to come, Rapsody hopes to follow that same path with music, the arts and even fashion one day:

“I definitely want to do my own clothing line at some point. Maybe like some tomboy feminine-type style ’cause women that are tomboys are sexy too, so I want to create a space for that.”

If Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad and Ms. Hill have taught us anything, it’s that there’s always space.

SNL Spoofs R.Kelly Interview

Many parodies of R. Kelly‘s emotional interview with Gayle King have been made already, but SNL’s spoof was certainly one worth watching. Kenan Thompson took on the role of Kelly while Leslie Jones hilariously played Gayle in the show’s opening skit and they didn’t miss a beat. But that wasn’t the end of the R. Kelly talk on Saturday’s show.

SNL cast member Pete Davidson gave his two cents on the pied piper’s recent antics saying

“If you support the Catholic Church, isn’t that like the same thing as being a R. Kelly fan? I don’t really see a difference, only, like, one’s music is significantly better. Look, I’m not saying it’s an easy decision, I’m just saying, you don’t know how good someone’s music is until you find out they’re a pedophile. “And the reason everyone’s so upset is because R. Kelly and Michael Jackson made great music. If I found out Macklemore did some weird stuff, I’d be happy to free up the space on my iPhone.”

Atlanta FX FUBU episode

Source: Guy D’Alema/FX / Guy D’Alema/FX

Before Fashion Nova changed the game with fly, affordable clothing, there were clothing lines and fashion brands that made sure folks always looked their best — but on a budget. Brands like FUBU, which literally stands for For Us By Us, were specifically designed to give Black folks their own lane in the fashion industry. Creators of the sportswear brand, Daymond John, Keith Perrin, J. Alexander Martin and Carl Martin, recently spoke out on how much racism plagues the fashion industry:

“Remember how much flak we got when people thought we were only for black people? But we weren’t. We came out and said, ‘Who’s ever going to respect and value the hip-hop culture?’ Because we heard all these brands didn’t respect rappers or African-Americans. We weren’t going to be prejudiced like we thought other people were. You only see the four of us here, but in our peak we had 400 [employees] and I think we were evenly broken up with Asian, African-American, Middle Eastern, Jewish.”

The brand was so impactful and monumental to the culture that Solange made a song about it.

When explaining her lyrics to F.U.B.U to Genius, Solo said:

“I remember reading stories on the product placement, and seeing LL Cool J wearing a FUBU hat in a national GAP advertisement. FUBU exhibited Blackness in any space, on a huge global level, and that is what I wanted to do with the song.”

Earlier this month, it was announced that the popular brand was making a comeback, and Black Twitter was hilariously hyyype.

“They tryna bring back Fubu and Blackplanet. Ja Rule back in trouble with the law. Y’all tryna turn this back to 02-03 again huh?” – @JunoDaHippie

“If you think imma cop some FUBU at a reasonable price in the year of 2019, you’re damn right!” – @Cool_Mintz

“FUBU and baby phat coming back. B2K and Pretty Ricky back on tour. A new “bad boys” is coming out. Its really 2003 right now” -@BellaRoona_

Speaking of nostalgic brands, Kimora Lee Simmons also announced that she was bringing Baby Phat back. The mogul posted a video on Instagram with the caption, “Guess who’s bizaack… 😍#DontMakeMeHaveToRelapseOnThese…. #HappyInternatinationalWomensDay”

“Baby Phat is the original bad bitch attire” – @BumbleXbeee

“I’m gone need them baby phat jumpsuits in EVERY color. Lol”— @Star_Maviya

Ford Releases Two Ads Featuring The “Black Panther” Star

Angela Bassett has partnered with the Ford Motor Co. for two commercials that celebrate the African-American experience.

The ads, “Built Ford Proud: We Lead” and “Ode to the Builders,” is narrated by Bassett and feature African-American families and Ford employees along with imagery like Detroit’s Joe Louis Fist and the Los Angeles Crenshaw Mural.

“I am proud to have narrated these inspiring and powerful Ford spots that showcase the leadership and strength that are embedded in the African American community,” Bassett said in a statement.

Bassett premiered the two spots last month at Essence’s “Black Women in Hollywood” luncheon before celebrating “Black Panther’s” historic win at the Academy Awards.

You can add Bobby Shmurda to the list of folks who want nothing to do with Tekashia69 after his November arrest.  VladTV interviewed Bobby via phone and reminded him that 69 is fully cooperating with police before asking whether or not he’d do another track with the rainbow haired rapper.

Bobby, who was featured on 69’s chart topping track “Stoopid”, didn’t hesitate to answer, saying:

“Hell m****ck*ng no! I don’t even want to be next to that man—I’m good. These m*****ckers would have everybody locked up. That’s why I tell these kids, too: These entertainers they just entertainers. They ain’t living that shit they be talking.”

Bobby added that he avoided snitching in his case by taking more prison time. However, he says that he’ll be a free man in 20 months and it’s “gonna be a movie”. Meanwhile, Tekashi’s sentence went from a minimum of 47 years to him being released in 2020 thanks to the terms of his recent plea deal.

Should be an interesting two years for hip hop.

Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanfield side-by-side

The New Flick Will Hit Netflix In April

It seems Gina Rodriguez is taking a break from her colorblind confessions to star in a new romantic comedy headed for Netflix.

In Someone Great, Rodriguez plays Jenny, an aspiring music journalist who gets her dream job in San Francisco. The only issue is she has to leave New York City, and her boyfriend of nine years (Lakeith Stanfield) decides to break up with her. To ease the pain, Rodriguez plans a night to remember with her two best friends.

The flick stars DeWanda Wise from She’s Gotta Have It fame and Brittany Snow from Pitch Perfect.

Considering Rodriguez doesn’t have the best reputation in Black public opinion, the response should be interesting for this movie arriving on Netflix April 19. Check out the trailer below, and let us know if you’re adding it to your list.
